He's definitely one of the biggest soccer fans I know.

In fact, he's basically knocked all forms of FB down his list and soccer is far and away his favorite sport these days.

Man United
Chelsea
Man City
Arsenal

are the big time clubs right now. Man U is the most polarizing. Liverpool was the greatest team in England but they've been kind of shitty lately, getting better every year though.

There's no team that brings up the rear every year because they get relegated if they finish bottom 3.

In fact, while I don't care for the BCS or the bowl system, there is at least a final game for the supposed best two teams. So its technically a one game playoff.
And they play that one game because it's impossible for every team to play each other twice in the regular season. There's no reason for a playoff in the European leagues. There's 20 teams. Play every one twice and have a true champion.

I've heard the argument for why a 20 team table where everyone plays twice and a winner is declared at the end is better than a system with a playoff a million times before.

I don't agree with that notion and never will. I'd rather you take the top teams at the end and put them in a playoff. Sorry, but for me that's just a better system.

It's not like I don't follow soccer at all. I'm an FCD supporter. I've gotten an earful from snobby soccer friends who can't fathom why I'd watch MLS and not give two shits about the other leagues. They are especially rankled that I care more about the MLS Cup winner and only care about the Supporters Shield for CONCACAF purposes.

BTW, I fully admit if DFW didn't have an MLS team I wouldn't follow the league.

Liverpool FTW

But Luis Suarez is the Dwight Howard of EPL players. Liverpool needs to send him packing.

I used to think soccer is gay and/or not a sport as of about 3-4 years ago. It has probably become my favorite sport right now next to college football. Still have a lot to learn but that is part of the fun for me. I would certainly much rather watch the PL than the NBA. I hope people of the MSB demographic give it a chance since NBC is expanding coverage so much... they won't be disappointed.

No. I hate soccer with a passion. The most boring major sport on earth. However, I would love any network to challenge ESPN at some point.

The LA/Dallas game this past Sunday was one of the most exciting games I've seen in any sport.

HOpefully I can get into the habit of watching (though conflicting with CFB season will be tough).

Nothing better than waking up on Saturday and Sunday morning (ESPECIALLY when it's cool/cold outside) and vegging on the coach from 6 AM until kickoff of the first football game.

I find it ironic that some of the people on this board bash soccer but I see threads about golf. Golf if probably the least athletic of the popular sports. I never really thought soccer was a sissy sport or anything but it took me a little while to get into it because I didn't understand it that much. Honestly, the FIFA games is what really got me into it.

Well, you would be wrong, especially when your 'top teams' come from human polls.

Since I don't know about the epl, tell me about the teams so I can pick a team to root for.

Not mine but here is a great summary of the EPL:

I strongly recommend if you want to give this a go that you select your favorite team. But one word of caution. There are 3 groups in the English top division. Group 1 has 4 teams: Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal. This group has nearly all of their games televised. They also win nearly every trophy of substance. They also buy nearly every player of substance. If you want a team that you will enjoy following, Group 1 is for you.

Group 2 includes middle of the road clubs: Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Bolton, Blackburn, Charlton, Everton, Fulham, Tottenham, and Middlesbrough. These clubs will get you more respect from the English guy if you pick them, but only some of their games are televised, and they have virtually no chance of winning the league or the FA Cup (I’ll explain later). When they get good players, they will ultimately lose them to the big clubs (Wayne Rooney from Everton to Manchester United is one example) and while they always stay in the top division, they will frustrate you more often than not.

And, finally Group 3. This group has Reading, Wigan, Sheffield, Watford, Portsmouth, and West Ham (who might need to be in group 2). These are teams you should not make your favorites unless you enjoy the Rangers and you want your soccer team to remind you of them. They will try real hard, but they have no chance. Their only goal all season long will be to avoid relegation. That means they are trying to finish at least 17th out of 20 so they can remain in the top division. And it will take every ounce of strength to do that. There are a number of other teams that also belong in this group, but since those other teams are in the Coca-Cola Championship right now (division two), they will not even be mentioned in this space. Avoid these teams at all cost.

Again, I strongly recommend you select a team, and get to know the players and rivals, and so forth, otherwise the enormity of World Football will swallow you up. Focus on your team and their situation and I assure you will enjoy this.
