NBA Should Take Over Vegas to Finish The Season

Could this actually work?

quote:

As sports leagues across the country wait out the coronavirus and contemplate what a return to league play might look like, there’s a perfect solution that could allow the NBA, uniquely among the major team sports leagues, to finish its season without requiring teams to travel around the country and risk infection by flying from one basketball gym to another.

Rather than try to play around the country or pick a few neutral sites to host games, the NBA should relocate the entire league to Las Vegas, put every team inside hotels the league exclusively controls, and play out the remainder of the season in gyms there. (This isn’t as easy of an option for the NHL given the need for multiple ice rinks, but the NHL could consider something similar, relocating to a place, Canada maybe, where there are multiple ice rinks in close proximity and they could set up a similar hockey bubble to protect everyone in the league. Major League Baseball and the MLS, since both are played outdoors, may have a bevy of options so long as they are willing to play without fans present. Overseas, the English Premier League is reportedly considering a soccer “bubble” in June and July to finish its season.)

But the NBA, thanks to the prevalence of basketball courts, has a tremendous opportunity to play its games in Las Vegas, broadcasting them around the world from sin city courts.

I know, I know, it sounds crazy to talk about finishing the NBA season in a location like Las Vegas, but there’s a tremendous amount of logic to the idea when you work through the thought experiment.

In fact, the league may already be considering it, as ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently floated the idea that the NBA was contemplating a college campus, Las Vegas, and an island in the Bahamas as options to finish out its season.

So why does Las Vegas make the most sense?

Let’s dive in and discuss the idea....

I usually wouldn't care at all but given how we have nothing else right now I would find myself watching if this somehow happened.

I read Windhorst’s article last night. It seems like the “bubble” strategy could work in China but the players here and the union will never sign off on that.

This won't happen, but I'm bored so I'll contribute. The MLB could do this just as easily if they played all their games at spring training sites. For instance, all the teams in Arizona play in the Phoenix metro area, and I believe 15 or so teams play spring training in AZ, so that seems to be plenty of fields to play games.

Baseball, with no fans, would have a hard time even spreading the virus since the majority are at a safe distance apart anyway. The NBA is physical and everyone is on top of each other.

Been screaming this. Stop the midweek games, just play the conference schedule and then go to playoffs. No crowds at any.

As for Vegas - March Madness should take precedence over NBA

Something about it has to be shortened... the Pelicans have 18 scheduled games left, among other teams, and of course, teams have to have enough days to play up to 28 playoff games.

Of course without travel involved, you could theoretically play more games back to back if the players union agrees. That max of 28 playoff games may have to become a max of 16 (3-3-3-7) or 20 (3-5-5-7)

Yeah, it's just hitting me tonight that spring/summer sports are over and football might really be in doubt. Lake Show/Clip Show WCF or anything with the Rox deep in the playoffs would have been incredible for the board. I hope Mr. Perfect has another outlet.

Matt Youmans and Paulie Howard were talking about this on VSiN Friday. It's what the NBA insider whispers are suggesting strongly could happen. And with a tourney of some sort. Plus, Silver gonna look at LV for next expansion..a hard early recon mission.

NFL, NBA, Ky Derby, MLB, Wimbledon/US Open, etc..having close overlap..sensory overload..too much at once.

Normally I don't watch much NBA regular season games and only go to a couple Pels games during the season, however, right now, I would love some live sports being played.

James Harden would be broke and the Rockets would be a first round exist with all those strip clubs for him to finance
