Hold on a sec...we can play this "what if" game all day long. It won't get us anywhere.
I see what you're saying. However, I believe (my opinion) that you should use your best in the post season. They could have played him less in the regular season or put him in the bullpen. There were other options.
If they are eliminated today, you better believe that 99 percent of baseball fans (and probably 100 percent of Nats fans) will look at this decision as a poor decision at best.
My opinion.

John Lannan had an atrocious 1.47 WHIP
I think average is the more appropriate word

Hideo Nomo
Dwight Gooden
Kerry Wood
Dontrelle Willis
Nomo stands out in this list--are you talking about his use in Japan? He was 26 in his rookie season.
Gooden was 19
Wood was 21
Willis was 21
Also, I wonder if this was not so much the innings they pitched as it was the # of pitches they threw per game. As somebody who watched a lot of Cubs games in the 90s and early 2000s, Kerry Wood had some questionably high pitch count games.
And you can individually look at guys and construct a story as to why they tailed off, Kerry Wood had been abused in high school and had that crazy arm action with his curveball, Willis had the funky delivery, Gooden was not taking care of his body at all, etc.

151 pitches in the state semifinal game his senior year. And yes "game" is singular.

Everyone needs to read this excellent Grantland piece for the definitive empirical reasons why this was a mistake:
LINK
In short, it's all about pitch counts vs innings counts. And the fact that the Nats had already minimized his injury risk, and this added precaution really doesn't minimize it any further.

It could be a huge positive longterm if it helps build the Nationals' reputation among players as being an organization that takes care of its personnel, thereby making it easier to attract players.
If I'm a player there's no chance I'm ever even looking at Washington. Who in the world wants to go somewhere and participate in 85% of the season and then get put on the shelf when it really matters? I'm going somewhere that wants to win.

Exactly, how about guys like CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander who can seemingly throw 110 pitches every start and be perfectly fine

Treat every pitcher on an individual basis. Guys like Sabathia and Verlander are horses that you can give them the balls every five days and let them go the distance with no repercussions.
On the other hand, my boy Josh Johnson does not have that ability to throw CG's at will. Strasburg looks to be more like JJ than CC in terms of stamina.
Everyone screaming for Rizzo's head is also forgetting that Stras was pressing by the end and appeared quite tired. The major jump in innings up to 160 taxed him enough.

Pitch the kid every Sunday, or skip every 5th start, say. The real problem is that these young pitchers don't pitch nearly enough innings in the minors to build up their arms and learn their craft.
