Nadal could be on his deathbed with a 110 degree fever and he would still find a way to beat Federer.

That is all.

....or it could be complete fact.

Do me a favor: pull up the draw for the 2004 Miami Masters. Did Nadal and Fedsmug play? Who won? How old was Nadal? Was that result a fluke, or the start of a trend?

I look forward to the results of your research.

Owned is the appropriate word.

Well certainly some fraction would work.

Nadal is 19-10 against Federer. Owned is the appropriate word. And I think 13-6 in slams. Again, owned is the appropriate word. And I consider Federer the greatest to play the game because of the numbers. Ranked #1 for 300+ weeks, 76 titles, and 17 grand slam titles. But, Nadal owns him.

Owned is definitely the appropriate word.

Nadal is 8-2 against Fedsmug in slams. And 19-5 when playing outdoors. Two of those 5 outdoor wins -- and the only two meaningful wins Roger Federer has over Rafael Nadal -- were the 2006 and 2007 Wimby finals, which was when Fedsmug was in his absolute prime, and Nadal was 19 and 20, and still a clay court specialist trying to figure out how to adapt his game to grass. And Nadal almost won the 2007 final.

By numbers, Federer is clearly the best tennis player of all time. His longevity, his consistency, and his general imperviousness to injuries is something that you have to count in his favor. And those things have allowed him to build up a tennis resume that is unmatched.

But Nadal owns him, and always has.

That doesn't tell the whole story. It isn't Federer's fault that he is just good enough on clay to make it to the finals, but not good enough to beat the best clay court player of all time. 14 of their 29 matches have been on clay with Nadal winning 12 of those. On hard courts they are 6-6 and Federer leads 2-1 on grass.

Ok well it can go both ways. There basically 500. on other surfaces but Nadal dominates in clay which is the difference. Not his fault Federer isn't "good enough" on clay. 19-10 tells the whole story IMO. You can't just disregard the clay court matches and act like they didn't happen just because Nadal is the king of clay.

Well said BobbyRay.

On outdoor hard courts Nadal leads 6-2. The only surface where Federer has Nadal's number is indoor hard courts, and that's partially because Rafa tanks the world tour finals every year (the end of year event that only the top 8 players in the world make it to), which is played in the indoor 02 arena in London.

Anyway, back to addressing his point. It's a stupid point. Yes, they've met more on clay, which is Rafa's preferred surface. But who's to say the results would be appreciably different had they met on any other surface. By 2008, Nadal was a better hard court player than Fed, a better grass court player than Fed, and a better clay court player than Fed. In fact, when was the last time Federer beat Nadal in a five set match? Correct me if I"m wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was Wimby 2007. And the only other time was Wimby 2006.

Since then we've had Wimby 2008 final, Aussie Open 2009 final, French Open 2010 final, and Aussie Open 2012 Semifinal.....all won by Nadal.

Believe me, I'm no stranger to this argument, and I've heard myriad attempts at spinning the Nadal/Fed H2H results in a more Fed-favorable manner. It's straw-grasping epitomized.

Nadal owns Federer.

Nadal has never been a better hard court player than Federer. There are certain elements to his playing style that give him an advantage against Federer in head to head matchups on any surface, but if you look at their performance against the field it's not even in the same ballpark. Nadal has never in his career defended a single title at any level off of clay (I found this shocking honestly), and he hasn't won a non-clay court event since 2010.
