Nolan Ryan who is considered one of the top 50 players of all time only has 32 more wins than loses.
Speaking of overrated. He also has a ton of walks and a mediocre ERA. Are those stats overrated or maybe, just maybe, its Ryan.
Yeah, I really hate One True Number stats. I understand the desire to reduce a player to one value to compare different types of players, but it is a fool's errand. Also, it's important to know HOW a player generated that value. Saying two guys with a WAR of 3.0 are the same (even assuming WAR is accurate, which it isn't) is just wrong, wrong, wrong. What if one guy is a hulking power hitter who can barely play defense and the other is a slap hitting speedster who carries a great glove and tremendous speed? WAR can't come close to telling us the differences in these players. It's the contours of a player's production that makes stats meaningful.
And who rates pitcher wins? How is it overrated if everyone has agreed its not very meaningful?

During the post-Superbowl Joe Flacco discussions, most people on this board would've said W-L record is the most overrated statistic.

W/L for pitchers
Not over a career.

I'd like to agree but it strangely still re-emerges as a major discussion point when the Cy Young is in question

Get out of here with that crap.

Yes over a career.
W/L is based on their team. Not on the pitcher alone. Use Felix Hernandez for example - if he was on a good team then he wouldn't average 14 wins and 11 loses per season. He won the Cy Young with a 13-12 record.

It is rare that I agree with barry but... while Nolan Ryan is a legend who made his mark with his no-hitters and his phenomenal athletic talent... but he really is wildly over-valued by a lot of baseball fans.

Cy Young voters are better at looking at more than wins then even 10 years ago. Remember less than 10 years ago Bartolo Colon won the Cy Young while Johan Santana was (much) better than him in every major stat besides wins. While voters still value wins, I doubt something like Colon winning would happen today.
