It appears that some very poor investigative journalism may blow up in the Dispatch's face.
quote:
BMV records show that former linebacker Thaddeus Gibson paid $13,700 for a 2007 Chrysler 300C that he bought from former Jack Maxton salesman Aaron Kniffin in June 2007.
The Dispatch reported last week that the title to Gibson's car listed the purchase price as zero. Jack Maxton owner Jeff Mauk said he couldn't explain the reason.
But a prior title on the vehicle obtained by The Dispatch yesterday shows that the car with 13,760 miles was purchased on June 27, 2007, and financed through Huntington National Bank. The title without a purchase price was issued on March 6, 2008, with Huntington still listed as the lender.

That's very cheap fwiw.

Didn't check pricing. Not a car I'd buy so I have no idea of the value.

I KBB'd it(which isn't a great source, but can give a ballpark) and I did just a normal 300C with normal features and listed the mileage and the suggested retail is around 21,500-22,000

i don't think any used car for 13,000 can be considered too cheap can it?

Well back in 2007, he bought a 2007, so it was only about a year old with only +13,000 miles on it.
Needless to say, he got a very, very good deal imo.
When you get a roughly $10,000 discount, that is cheap.

thats a rough term to prove with a car dealership. and i'm new to this, the bluebook deal is for used cars?

Not true. A discount that you or I couldn't get is all that is needed.
I presumed by discount, you meant a deal for them. If they garnered 50+ sales from osu players and family at their everyday low prices, I am not sure how any other car dealership can compete

Yeah, but it's pretty hard to know without seeing the condition and options of the car.
But a less than one year old car with only 13k miles, probably isn't going to sell for $13,000, unless it's a barebones, economy stripped out version of a cheap American car, which a 300C isn't.

Also, it wouldn't be hard to find the exact options of this car with the VIN number, which if they found out the purchase price I'm sure they have the VIN number.

the thing is though, couldn't i technically come in and get the same deal thad got?
thats where i don't see how the ncaa can prove this. but it does seem greasy

No, because the dealership lost money(99.99% chance) on that deal.

So? How the dealership handles its affairs isnt the NCAA's concern. If people were still paying significant money for something, the NCAA cant say "Oh, well you only paid 2/3 of what its worth!".
The only missing link is who these guys were guests of at games. If these guys were guests of players who they didn't sell anything to (as they claim) I don't see how this is an NCAA issue at all.

No, you couldn't. A 2007 300C with about 30k miles is currently listed on Autotrader in my area for $21995. $13k as a current model year car seems absurdly low to me.

actually they can you see, as that would be called "receiving improper benefits"

If an ordinary student couldn't get the same deal(which they couldn't) then it's a violation. It's still a benefit of being a player.
That's the issue. But it is somewhat difficult to prove without being there for the whole deal, seeing the car, etc.
