That's the issue. But it is somewhat difficult to prove without being there for the whole deal, seeing the car, etc.

Exactly. I don't see how its anything that can be proved. How do we know this car has been wrecked or have flood damage? Or is a previous rental car?

A simple carfax on the car would show all three of those fwiw.

And it most likely was a rental, but that doesn't diminish it's value.

and i know you wanna see us go down vabuckeye, but if thad also traded in a car or had a down payment this also could affect things.

best to let the facts come out before we get all pissy

The purchase price isn't effected by a trade fwiw, especially a used car.

In Ohio, you have to pay tax on the full price of a used car even if you trade a vehicle in. (IF it's a new car, then tax is only paid of the difference)

I don't count you as one of "us".

I don't want to see Ohio State go down but facts are facts.

You've never purchased a car from a dealership, correct? Because you know nothing about the paperwork or process. A down payment or trade-in doesn't affect the purchase price. It's a line item deduction after the price is determined.

Just from what I've noticed recently(past couple days) ffo is getting a LITTLE better.

I could be wrong of course, but I think he isn't blindly throwing his support behind anything OSU/Jim Tressel as much as he was before.

So? How the dealership handles its affairs isnt the NCAA's concern. If people were still paying significant money for something, the NCAA cant say "Oh, well you only paid 2/3 of what its worth!".

not sure if serious

Yes serious. 14k for a used car is still a shite load of money, the dude didn't get it for $200, or $0 as what sparked the hysteria. I don't see how they can say it was an improper benefit, there isn't enough proof to do so in the end. Now if these dudes were selling cars to players for cheap and getting seats at games in return, then thats a big deal.

Why else would they (the salesmen) be doing this if they didn't get benefits in return?

The article I read before they went to the 07 Florida game, and I think the 09 Rose Bowl?

He has since been banned from getting free tickets. Can you say red flag?

That's an exageration, come on now.

It is probably a 21-22k car retail.

If it was a rental they probably got it for 18k at auction.

So the dealership is taking a 4-8K loss? No way the NCAA doesnt find trouble with that.

I never said they shouldn't. Proving it could be a little gray.

Records show that Kniffin has been a game-day guest of unnamed players to four football games: Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin in 2007 and Youngstown State in 2008.

His former boss at Auto Direct, Jason Goss, was a players' guest at the 2007 National Championship, the Penn State game in 2008 and the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, according to Ohio State records

The whole thing hinges on if he was the guest of players he sold cars to. He says he wasn't. If he was, then how come that hasn't come out by now? You have to believe people are digging furiously.

There will never be enough proof for the NCAA to say that they received an improper benefit by "only" paying 14k for a used car.

I'm more worried that they banned this guy from getting free tickets because they knew the players were going him to get good deals.

Per ESPN a few minutes ago. Didn't look to see if anyone else posted it.

Good work Dispatch.

quote:

Former Ohio State linebacker Thaddeus Gibson didn't understand why his purchase of a used Chrysler 300C was listed at $0 in documents disclosed in a media report, since he was still making payments on the vehicle.

Now, newly uncovered documents appear to back up Gibson -- to the tune of $13,700.

In an initial report on Ohio State's investigation of car sales to athletes and their families, the Dispatch cited documents showing a purchase price of $0 for Gibson's car.

ETA:

looks like you did Sprint.
