The Masterson deal is actually a pretty good one. Little risk with some upside and they retain all their prized prospects.

With that said, Masterson does suck. But he's moving to the NL and St. Louis does a great job with reclamation guys. Kyle Lohse, Jake Westbrook, etc. Who knows? They may be able to turn things around for Masterson too. At worst, they get a long man out the bullpen who has ton of experience in that role too. Not much to lose in this deal.

He looks like a pretty good prospect to me. Not bad for a player in decline and on the DL.

There is only one way that I can see this trade making sense and that is if it's in preparation for another trade. What I'm holding out hope for? Miller or one of the starters is packaged for a bat. Then I get why you had to go make a low risk/low reward trade for another starter who, as you say, sucks.

That was all under Dave Duncan. If this were 5 years ago, I'd buy that argument.

My point is they can't keep them all. A decision has to be made. For instance, is your RF Craig or Taveras. Make that decision and then package the other one for someone who may actually help you win in the post season. I don't know if Mo has the balls to ever make that decision.

I don't get why you seem so agitated with Mo. The Cardinals have been one of the best run teams in baseball throughout his tenure. And the fact of the matter is, he is smarter than anyone in this thread (myself certainly included) and has way better information than any of us. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt that he knows what he is doing.

Yeah you just have to ignore tduecen guy is banned more than not for a reason.

Great read in FanGraphs on the trade.

quote:

Masterson’s been hurt by walks, but he’s also been devastated by damage on balls in play. We all know him to be among the most extreme groundballers in the league. So, let’s look at some 2014 team-level defensive rankings:

Indians, overall

last in UZRlast in DRS

Cardinals, overall

8th in UZR1st in DRS

Indians, infield

last in UZRlast in DRS

Cardinals, infield

3rd in UZR1st in DRS

Masterson is going from pitching in front of the worst defense in baseball to pitching in front of arguably the best. So he doesn’t even have to improve to generate improved results, because fewer balls are going to get through or find grass with St. Louis. There might be no more extreme defensive swing in the league, so it’s almost like Masterson is going to get to go bowling with bumpers. At least, it could feel like that. The Cardinals will give him support.

My god some of you act like masterson is chopped liver. He has a 24% k rate and great upside. This is a great trade for the cardinals. The OF is logjammed and we got a very good serviceable starter with a 3.14 era vs NL teams. You guys have probably never even seen him pitch. I think mo knows what he is doing /rant

Obviously masterson has much more upside, but i think you can understand why everyone doesn't share your opinion.

I picked jackson because a. he sucks and b. he also gets a lot of ground balls

Exactly, a ground ball pitcher with our defense is a great combo. Good trade for us for sure.

Defensive metrics are still highly dubious. Peralta is the SS and he long been a below par defensive player. He gets to St L and suddenly he's one of the best per the metrics.
Masterson throws a lot of ground balls, so if the st Louis range is really that good, he should be effective.

well he isn't that good either....

quote:

upside? He is dealing with a knee issue, coming off the DL, and already 30... I'm not even sure he is an upgrade over Miller right now with the way he has pitched.

possibly because they gave up so little in return which says a lot about what they acquired

quote:

serviceable starter
exactly serviceable who will give you 5 maybe 6 innings and hopefully your offense (which is the real concern) can score enough for what he allows

Yeah no one has seen him pitch

Wacha to the 60 day DL, so trading for an arm makes sense, but this is more of Mo's low hanging fruit stuff.

He's already laid out the ground work for not making a significant move(3 weeks ago, claiming the prices are too high), planting that seed early.

They have pieces to get them a power bat, can Mo do it?

There isn't a power bat on the market though....
Bryd and Rios are the 2 best bets and neither can be considered game changers.....

Don't trade Taveras is rule 1, what power bat at you getting thats much of an upgrade elsewhere?

Or better starter?

Cardinals need to sit where they are. Trade Craig and maybe CMart to get a better bat? Maybe. But then I'd want Rios and he plays RF so that doesn't help us with Oscar ready.
