Pretty dumb but not as dumb as you. You didn’t even address my post. I never disagreed that umpires are better now. That’s besides the point.

my bad...i read that it was a myth and just assumed

i actually agree but he routinely did get 3"+ off plate. but not just him, so did pedro and then the flamethrowers like Roger and Nolan did too.

Ok but that’s not specific to Maddux. He was on even footing to everyone from his era.
I know he was on even footing with everyone in that era, but someone who throws with a ton of horizontal run will benefit more from a larger zone - which he did.

He's one of the best pitchers of all time. The point of my post was to say that Maddux was a unicorn and guys throwing 100 will always (and have always been) more valuable than guys who sit in the low 90s.

Not routinely. There’s 1 game on a big stage with especially bad umpiring that gets regularly referenced that kind of skews people’s perception. But he did get a bit bigger strike zone than most. That wasn’t just given to him because he was Greg Maddux, though. It was a product of how Maddux pitched. He was a master of manipulating the strike zone(and the umpires). It wasn’t an advantage just given to him, it is available for all pitchers to do if they have the requisite skill and ability.

100%

and people need to realize for the first decade and a half, Greg Maddux was well above league average in terms of velocity.

they remember the 2008 GM who had been in the league for 2 decades and that Maddux's 86-87 mph fastball and assume it was always like that. when it wasnt close.

why do randy johnson and nolan ryan have so many strikeouts? because they had had gaps in terms of velocity and secondary pitch movement compared to the league average.

But today, more home runs are hit, there is no DH, and guys are pretty much max effort every swing now.

The chance your mistake pitch is to a contact hitter who's looking to go the other way is much lower today than it was in the 90s/00s.
It also means significantly more strikeouts. I'd argue pitching when the league batting average was 30 points higher than it is now points to the opposite of your assertion.

As far as more home runs getting hit today, 1996, 2006, 2001, 2004, 1999, and 2000 are all in the top 15 seasons all-time in home runs hit per team per game. There were more total home runs hit in the 2000 season than last year AND the league batting average was 25 points higher.

look at my heat map charts....even in 2007 the strikezone was terrible compared to today. go back another 15 years and its really bad. can say what you want...but he did get 3" routinely.

They asked Freddie Freeman how many pitches it takes him to get his timing on a 100mph fastball.

He said, "How many? One."

His fastball was above league average for the first 12 years of his career, but for all of his prime it was only slightly higher.

But compared to other aces and elite pitchers of his time he was considerably slower.

Who are you arguing with? I never said anything to the contrary. I’ve stated several times in this thread that the umpires are better today. ??

Then why are we out here acting like he threw 85 his whole career like so many do on here?

Many will post gifs of him getting calls 5 inches outside but that’s from 1 game and 1 bad umpire.

We talking about Livan Hernandez? One game of that shite made Livan famous.
