That was fun. But for my money, the most puzzling trade was Josh Hader. Why, just why would management do this one? The locker room was beyond mad and demoralized after the trade. His presence with the team and his status as still the best reliever in baseball just added to the madness. Will the Brewers lose that team coming down the stretch for this hair-brain idea?
It was borderline what Baltimore did to their fans by selling assets as the Orioles were playing some of the best ball in years, with the playoffs in sight. Man, you have to give your fans something to believe in. Everything can't be about the future.
But the Brewers are a first-place team and there has to come a time when the ownership believes the time to win is NOW and put the pedal down. The Brewers sent the opposite message and shocked that locker room.

I can see the locker room and fans hating that one, but from a business perspective it was a great deal for the Brewers.
They traded from a position of strength and got a capable RP back, a reclamation project in Lamet, and two ranked prospects.

From a baseball sense, its a perfectly fine trade. They got assets out of a player that they can afford to re-sign next year, and got a closer back for the rest of the season that has been just as good. They can address the closer for next season and going forward in the offseason.
Hader's issue is home runs, and now he gets to play most of his games in a pitcher friendly park. Rogers probably fits the Brewers better because he doesn't give up as many home runs, but his numbers will increase some there with the park move.
But for the human element aspect of it yeah, I'm sure it was very tough on the players to see a teammate of that caliber get moved when you're in first place. Small Market teams have to be more cut throat.

Is it worth it to make the playoffs only to get eliminated quickly?
I like the Brewers moves
They picked up
Bush
Rogers
Lamet
Rosenthal
+ 2 prospects
So they added some depth to their bullpen and maybe they can turn Lamet back into a serviceable starter

Have they taken on many "reclamation projects" in the past? I know they are great at developing guys in their system, but I can't think of them taking damaged goods and getting more out of them than they invested. That said, theres no reason they shouldn't be able to do it IMO.

4 of the Brewers top 5 prospects are outfielders. I'm sure at least one if not a couple of them will play other positions, but that seems like a position of strength they could have leveraged for an upgrade.

Lamet seems like a bullpen piece for now. He'd be serviceable if he could cut the walks in half.

So when do you send the message that we are here to win it? And I don't mean sort of. You get rid of one of the heartbeats of that team's success for years because he's up for free agency in '23'? A first-place Brewers team? No, when I saw the locker room and heard guys expressing themselves on this one I knew they just screwed up the chemistry on that team.
I have no idea how you win a championship constantly acting like one of the little kids on the block. You don't.

They are a little kid on the block. Teams like the Brewers and Rays (who are good despite that) know what they are and act accordingly. Otherwise you become the Pirates.

They turned former Padre Eric Lauer into a serviceable starter other than that Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, and Ashby come from their system

They tried that when they signed Yelich to a massive deal and it hasn't gone as planned so far, but hexs only 30 so there is still time. They will need money to keep Burnes and Woodruff far more than Hader.

Maybe we could show them pictures of Atlanta and Washington holding the trophy.

When Washington won they had the 6th highest payroll that year
Atlanta had the 9th highest payroll when they won

Atlanta convinced basically all their core to take dirt cheap deals, and still has a top 10 payroll. Washington was spending like crazy until they recently decided to rebuild after they won it. Not really great comparisons.

Not for those who say it can't be done. Not for those who think we need to be sellers to exist in MLB. Hey, here's a novel thought for MLB, why not pay some of your assets and fan favorites and try to put a product on the field every day that the fans can be proud of and most importantly, enjoy? The fun is in the winning, any game.

Solid melt over a reliever

Yeah, Washington had a lot of money invested in Scherzer, Strasburg, and Corbin plus a young phenom in Soto and Rendon and Turner pre-free agency.
Also $18M in Ryan Zimmerman. They went all-in, won one, and now they are a bottom feeder because they couldn't keep that core together.
So, do you take that approach in the hopes of winning one knowing the future is not so bright? The Marlins have done it a few times. The Diamondbacks did it. The Padres have tried and failed several times, but we'll see about this year.
Or, take the stay competitive approach like the Rays?
Staying competitive is better than being a perennial loser.

MLB does encourage teams to put the best team on the field, which is why they have revenue sharing. For example in 2018 MLB each received 118m... now what those teams did with it is up to the ownership groups

Staying competitive hasn't resulted in increased attendance or MLB payroll as they stay near the bottom in both. An area teams like the Indians, A's have stayed for a few years now
