leveraged bama opening for a raise and ridiculous buyout. well done. another ad gets played like a fiddle.
He was coming off a 13-0 season (not counting the bowl game) where FSU probably got screwed out of a CFP appearance and had awful luck with their QB breaking his leg in an otherwise meaningless game. Had Alabama hired him the FSU fans would have gone crazy.
Coaches have leverage because fans/boosters are reactionary and emotional. However, Saban kind of put Alabama in a tight spot by choosing to retire so late in the football calendar. If Alabama would have hired Norvell the domino effect was FSU would have been put in a bind to make a hire late in the game. The timing as much as anything was a big leverage play for Norvell. Plus, he had gone 9-3 and 13-0 (regular season) in his last two seasons at that point. There was nothing to suggest he was about to completely tank.
This was NOT like the stupid extension Woodward gave O after the 2019 NC. Everyone with critical thinking skills knew that from a coaching standpoint that Brady was the biggest reason for that season (followed by Aranda). O was just along for the ride and NO other power conf. school was going to hire O even after that season. That was a dumb extension the day it was made

FSU is very cash poor. They don’t have the ability to do what a program of their pedigree should be able to do NIL and contract wise.

I get extending him after showing some success, that's fine....but these ADs get way ahead of their skis and give them a ridiculous contract like they're locking up a championship level coach at the first sign of success or someone trying to poach.

Is it too early to make a prediction on when he will be fired?
I can see him getting fired if they are 2-5 after a loss to Miami, heading into the pre-Halloween bye week.
I know he has a lot of money left, but 2-5 (with your best win being +17 over New Mexico State) coming on the heels of 2-10 and 5-7 should be enough.

I know Florida State has limited resources
Which is odd given their history and how dominant they were in the 90’s and 2000’s.

Yeah gonna be a sunk cost issue for FSU
Fire him and pay somebody 2 million a year and hope for best because it cant get worse

The more I watch Mike Norvell coach, the more I'm glad that team didn't make the 2022 playoff. They would have been destroyed by whoever played them despite how awesome their defense was.
