Only if you aren't paying attention. That's why you're supposed to be paying attention when you're sitting close to the action at baseball games.

Obviously, he didn't see the bat, otherwise, he would have gotten out of the way or at least not be claiming to be watching a fly ball. If you've ever seen a bat break like this in person, it's almost impossible to watch where the ball is going instead of the bat at first if you're watching the batter make his swing. The most likely scenario is that the guy wasn't really paying attention, heard the crack of the bat, looked up and saw the ball, but never saw the bat.
