Said that if you surround him with a lot of talent and play uptempo he can be successful in the league.
Except that Brees makes everyone around him better, not vice versa.

He had that in college. How'd that work out.

He isn't a terrible quarterback. The unrelenting hatred towards USC and the butthurt around here is ridiculous and illogical.
I'm a USC homer.
Barkley - with the best o-line (fewest sacks allowed in the nation) his Jr. year played pretty good.
But in all 4 years of his body of work, he hasn't improved much since a Freshman...ala Clausen/Powlus...and crumbles under pressure because he can't move...coupled with lame duck deep balls - despite throwing to Lee and Woods who can run under anything...Barkley continually missed them.
He can throw the good intermediate route and he lived off of bubble screens at USC. While he's not Captain checkdown - and can sling the ball when asked - he still has never felt like a Pro Starter...because he always needs to be perfectly comfortable and offense has to be perfectly clicking.
Barkley just isn't dynamic enough to put things on his shoulders of which the Pros requires. He's a peak-too-sooner...a guy who was way ahead of the curve in High School and started as first USC true freshman but it wasn't because of raw talent but great QB coaching and technical talent...I don't see him getting better and he would have to in order to survive the NFL.

Better question though...
If Brees never hurt his shoulder and stayed in San Diego...
Would he be the HOF QB he is today?
Most fortunate shoulder injury ever

Great analysis

"Plays in the spread offense, taking the bulk of his snaps from the shotgun... Tends to side-arm his passes going deep. Lacks accuracy and touch on his long throws...Does not possess the ideal height you look for in a pro passer, though his ability to scan the field helps him compensate in this area.

I see a lot of similarities. Not every good NFL qb was great in college. Barkley is extremely talented.

If he didn't go to USC, he'd be another guy struggling to make a roster, and NOBODY at ESPN would be talking him AT ALL, much less comparing him to Drew Brees.
Fact.
Where's all the talk and comparisons for Mike Glennon?

Mel Kiper and McShay thought Barkley would be a 4 time Heisman winner and #1 pick in the NFL draft

A.J. Smith was on his way to kicking Brees out of SD regardless, the injury just guaranteed it. Rivers would have been starting in 2006.

Without injury does Brees sign in NOLA? I think more than two teams take interest then. When did Carr leave Houston?
