Maybe it’s my imagination, but are assistant coaches getting younger and younger in cfb?

Maybe I’m misremembering, but it seems like it was the norm in the 90s and early 2000s for the OC/DC and other staff to be the the 45-60 age range

Seems like we are seeing more and more guys in their 30s getting hired onto major staff roles by major programs

Changing nature of the game itself? Could that explain it?

They relate more to the kids and likely have grown up with the spread/defending the spread.

I feel like the increased number of GAs and volunteer coaches have allowed many more to grow roots in their young-to-mid 20s allowing them to get paying jobs later on in their young careers.

1. Recruiting

2. Innovation vs. Experience. Innovation is more valuable today and more likely to come from younger sources.

3. Recruiting

I mean it's not unrealistic but I get the premise.

Start off as a GA at 22 and do that for a few years

Go be a solid position coach for 7 years.

Be an OC by 30.

It’s no longer a collegiate game. College football has been transitioning from a college game to an NFL developmental league. I still watch it but I miss the pageantry of the game from the 90’s and early 2000’s.

Arkansas just fired basically all of their position coaches and everyone they hired to replace these veterans were under 30 (most in their mid 20s) and a couple of them played at big time programs in college and had a cup of coffee in the NFL.

The reason?... Recruiting, recruiting, recruiting, recruiting, and more recruiting. I don't think the program gives two shits if these guys can coach or not. The moves were all made to keep their current kids out of the portal and bring in better talent by acting all fun and loose with the kids and telling them they can get them to the NFL.

Will the move work? I have my doubts, but college football is basically unrecognizable from what it was even 10 years ago, and not in a good way.

you sure it wasn’t about money?

No one wants to have the stagnant good ole boys coaching when they think their opponents are all innovative and fresh

I would talked to Jim about making that a rule for Michigan football. He did hired some new coaches and we will wait and see if he have turned the football program around for this fall.
