that game was immensely more hyped but these 2 teams are significantly better, with more legit pro talent on each

Debatable. UM that year was absolutely stacked with NFL talent. Go and check how many of those players are now in the league.

UM/OSU was more hyped obviously but I do think this years game will be better. I for one can't wait for it. The problem with this game is its in the beginning of november with still plenty of games left after. I even think the bama/UF 09 game may have been more hyped.

There have been several epic Miami-Florida State games that have produced the eventual national champion and had more NFL talent than what was on the field in the 2006 Michigan-Ohio State game. The only knock against those games is that they always took place in the first part of the season. In order for the the LSU-Alabama game to be remembered past this season, both teams will have to run the table after 11/05/11.

LSU has turned into Americas team at the college level.

A distinct regional Southern school with it's swamp water french dialects, Cajun lifestyles and creole catholic distrust and hate of anything and anyone from outside of that plantation has turned into Americas team?

You are one old delusional man.

Yes, those West Coast "elitists" just love LSU and your observational humor about how everyone who lives in California must be a fig.

The Midwest just loves LSU and your keen compliments on how they are slow, fat, dimwitted and soft.

The East coast just loves LSU and your utter disdain for their love of the arts, theater and high-brow culture.

America doesn't love you; why would it?

The school and the fans represent hating America. You are about as inclusive and friendly as the Third Reich.

Got to echo what others have said:

1 vs 2
Michigan vs Ohio State Rivalry
Final game of season
Bo S. passing away

Hoping LSU/Bama will be just as epic of a game though.

I'll go FSU v ND a game that caused NBC to give the Irish an exclusive contract

The reason I believe this game is bigger than the '06 OSU-UM game is I thought OSU and UM were overrated in '06. I felt OSU and the Big 10 had been overrated for some time. And before you lay into me with hindsight being 20/20 crap and that I'm a LSU homer, let me say that I realize the Big 10 was the best conference in the country at one time (and probably will be again one day) and that the OSU-UM is one of the greatest rivalries (if not the greatest) in the country. I will also be able admit when the SEC no longer houses the best football teams in the country. It just so happens that right here right now these are probably, and I mean probably, the two best teams in the country and in '06 that was not the case.

Surprisingly though they did beat Florida in their bowl game the next year, which to this day still surprises the shite out of me.
I don't think Michigan was going to lose to anyone that year playing for Lloyd Carr. They had to send him out the way they did even though he is an huge douche.

Claiming that the OSU vs Michigan game was one of the greatest games ever is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. The closest Michigan could get it was to 7 points and each time OSU went right down the field and scored. The game was a shoot out. It was obvious in the second half that Michigan had no chance to win the game, they could only keep it close.

Since much of this thread is revisionist history, this comment fits nicely. Too bad its false. The 1 v 2 FSU-ND game was in 93, it was on NBC, because it was the 3rd of 4th year of their deal with Notre Dame. It was the first time Gameday did a road trip, maybe that's what you were thinking off.

The deal was announced after the series was announced. It was NBC's desire to get the game that made them enter into a contract. The first ND game after the contract was ND UNC at MSG. So not revisionist history.

ETA:

I want to say that was the game where UNC debuted the argyle uniforms that they have now also.

The contract started in 1991, its was around $40M, Notre Dame was still an elite program then. I have a hard time believing NBC signed a 5 year deal and ponied up $40M in 1990 or so,just to broadcast a game 3 years later vs a team that had only recently become a powerhouse, with out some kind of quote from Dick Ebersol saying as much

How are people still hyping that game? The only way LSU/Bama compares to OSU/Michigan is if Bama gets blown out by Stanford and LSU gets blown out by Boise.

Both of those Big 10 teams were terribly overrated.

If I remember correctly, Florida State was on a run of finishing in top 5 consecutively and ND had won the NC in 89. ABC was the only one televising and the CFA had just started talking about breaking away to form its own "league" away from NCAA. Ebersol wanted a "jewel" as he was attempting to get the Olympics and World Series. That game was announced and then the contract was announced. I still think NBC was the only network to have World Series, Olympics, Triple Crown, and NBA Championship and NCAA Football "Championship" games in one calander year.

This year's game has more hype. After week 1 people have referred to LSU and BAMA as the top2 teams in the nation and calling November 5th the National Championship. These have been the top 2 teams in most people's minds all year. CBS made a special agreement with ESPN to be able to air this game at night which is unheard of. Plus factor in the Miles vs Saban factor...just ridiculous hype for this game.

Michigan wasn't a top 2 team until later in the year. Once it was established that Michigan was an elite team the hype built up and obviously the rivalry is second to none, but there has been more hype around this year's game and its going to be amped up next week.

Objectively which game was bigger? Taking off the P&G glasses, I'd have to say Ohio State vs Michigan because it was the actual conference championship as the last game of the season and a much bigger rivalry than LSU-BAMA.

PS idk if this belong on the SECR. I thought it would get more objective responses here

Michigan and OSU had more build up. If they had won their bowl games, the only thing that could possibly touch it would be a Bama/Auburn 1 vs 2 type game, IMO.

Respectfully disagree that tOSU and Michigan is best college rivalry. I think Army Navy is the rivalry that all are judged on, as everyone has an interest in it somehow.
