Though I loathe him, he'd be a good gamble at about $1 million/per. Not sure I'd go any higher than that.

I agree with that. Man, the Dodgers really dropped the ball on that signing. Surprised they don't get more flak for it.

No shite. How in God's name could they not have seen that coming?

While Ohman did have a better WHIP than extremely overratedrod, if the signing of him decides whether or not you have the best pen, you are no where near the best pen.

Ohman was lights out and one of the most effective relievers in baseball until the last month of the season, when the guy simply ran out of gas. Bobby was basically using him every other day, so I consider the stats he put up at the end of the year to be a wash.

After watching Ohman his entire career as a cub, and relief pitchers in general, there is nothing to suggest this "lights out" would ever happen again. Relief pitchers are the most inconsistant people in baseball and Will Ohman is no different. He has good stuff but he will often lose the plate for months at a time and sprinkle in some great outings. He can even be good for a month or two but if you are counting on him to be a go to guy for an entire season, keep your fingers crossed.

If they brought him back he would be a part of a very deep bullpen, one much deeper than last year. Gonzalez and Moylan will be healthy, and the revamped rotation will allow Campillo to move into the long relief role he excelled in last year. Jeff Bennett adds depth in middle relief, and Manny Acosta will probably rebound as he's given less responsibility. Ohman is more of a one-inning guy while Logan is more of a lefty specialist. And anything they get from Soriano will be a bonus.

Unfortunately, I don't expect much.

The Braves have 3 players in their pen that are good enough to close.
Every team has 3 players good enough. That doesn't mean they will succeed. I'm good with Gonzales (hopefully no elbow problems)- Soriano is NOT going to make it through the season without being DLd - Moylan (surgery)is now going to be 100% without missing a beat? Come on! I'm optimistic about all of the parts, but knowing how Bobby Cox overuses his favorites - this top 5 bullpen just isn't happening. I hope I'm wrong.

how long did you expect maddux, glavine, and smoltz to pitch?
i don't expect anything. it's just going to be the first time without any of them.. altho glavine could still make a comeback?

I was hoping we would get Sheets
Posted on 1/14/09 at 10:52 am to SPEEDY
I think maybe after Hudson blew out his elbow the Braves should shy away from burning a ton of money on someone who gets hurt every year
Posted on 1/14/09 at 10:59 am to SPEEDY
Sheets has never won more than 13 games. Theres a reason he's still on the market. Dude is straight up overrated.

Who is over rating him?
I would rather take the chance on a 30 year old starting pitcher with a better career strikeout-to-walk ratio than Johan Santana, Roy Oswalt and Roy Halladay, a lower career WHIP than Josh Beckett and Brandon Webb, and one who at the end of a 4 year contract, would be a full year younger than what Lowe is right now.
Lowe will be 39 at the end of his contract. That is a lot of money to be throwing at an old pitcher
Posted on 1/14/09 at 11:25 am to MilliDollaMoufPiece
Hasn't had an ERA over 4.00 or a WHIP over 1.3 in 6 years, the only stat you use is the one thats the least related to a pitchers actual mound performance. Yeah, he's really overrated.
Posted on 1/14/09 at 11:35 am to YouthInAsia
he also has pitched one complete season since '04
