Chase Utley will be available to the #Dodgers media this afternoon at Dodger Stadium. I’m not sure why. I hope it’s not a retirement announcement.

Chase Utley will hold a press conference today, the Dodgers announce. He never does that.

how does a player retiring affect his status on the 40 man? and his contract for tax purposes? any one know?

Would open up a spot on the 40 and he gives up what he hasn't been paid yet I assume.

Typically, if a player retires 100% voluntarily, his salary will end as soon as he has received the full amount earned. For example, a Major League Baseball player earns his salary during the baseball season (which ends in September or October), but he may be on a 12-month salary payment schedule, so if he retires at the end of the season, he'll keep getting paychecks through the end of December. If he retires mid-season and it is 100% voluntary, his salary will be pro-rated.

No way. He should be a slam dunk HOFer. 15th all-time among 2B in rWAR (better than 11 out of 20 HOF 2B), 11th all-time among 2B in fWAR, led MLB in fWAR over a 10 year period. He was a brilliant 2B both defensively and offensively and should easily get in.

his numbers are better than i thought. he will be an interesting case

doesnt have the career WAR but his peak WAR is comfortably in line. thats probably the more important category as well

appears to be retiring at the end of the season. Dodgers go to Philly at the end of July, so I'm sure he'll want to get one last ovation there before hanging it up.
