he had personnel here and his complex defense was rush 4 and play your corners 15 yards off the WRs even if Rick Clausen is the opposing QB.
He's a solid DC but very overrated. I think his first stint at Nebraska, one of the Bullocks twins lucked into a bunch of INTs and somehow Pelini got annointed by Herbstreit as this defensive genius.

It works when you have NFL caliber lineman getting to the passer. But as everyone witnessed last year it is suspect when your team sucks. Then again I do not think Saban could have coached up our pitiful D last year.

I do not think Holt was bad, only he had bad personal to run it. And well, Nick Aliotti actually is pretty good. But top 5, no way. However if he had the top D talent that LSU regularly gets, he could do wonders...
Now if Chavis was hired by Washington State do you all think Chavis would have a top 2 D in the Nation? Not me. A lot of it is what kind of talent you have to plug in and work with.

Chavis' late UT days will answer that. WIthout the personnel he becomes Mr. conservative. Safeties will start the play 10 yards out of the range of the camera for games on tv.

No, I should have used than. Thanks for catching that. Then would have been completely improper.
I'm interested to see what Everett Withers and Luke Fickell do with the Ohio State defense. Withers had good success at UNC with his defenses.
