Dean was the prototype rush end DE before they were even prototypes of the rush end.
He was an athletic stud and a genetic wonder. Dude had no body fat. He was such a specimen, like some dang Greek or Roman statue, he modeled for art classes while at La Tech.
I ran against his son Woodrow in track. Dude had the worst form but would dust us all the time. Solid RB for Ruston High as well. His daughter, Freida, was an all star in every sport. Fred's genetics were soemthing.
More than that, both of those kids were good people. Fred did well in sport and in life. Excellent man and father.

Was he any relation to Walter Dean of Grambling?

Could be, I don't know. I'll ask my folks.
Another Fred Dean bit of trivia. Only man faster than him on the football team was one of the RBs. Dude had it all, speed, strength, agility. People who rave over the rush ends of today have no idea Fred Dean was doing it all 40 years ago.

Used to piss me off as a young Saints fan.

Do that.I've always wondered whether he was related. Walter Dean was a fine college back( Walter Payton 1-AA player of the year once) at Grambling in 1990.
When I was young I mistakenly thought Fred was from Grambling State along with Gary "Big Hands" Johnson. They were a very nasty duo for the Chargers.

I spoke to him a few times over the years.
One of the nicest guys you could ever meet.
He was always gracious and took a few minutes to speak to everyone around.
God bless the 'Dean of Mean' and his family.

Yes they are related.

Walter Dean should not have won the Payton. DeAndre by far was the best player it was just because Dean went to Grambling.

Never made the argument for Walter Dean greatness just pointing out the athleticism of the Dean family......if related.

I played against Fred in high school. As the quarterback for Bastrop High School, I wasn't very comfortable looking at him across the line of scrimmage.

My roommate at SMS DeAndre Smith was 2 time Gateway MVP and All time QB in Gateway
I was just venting
No I understood the post about the family connection.
