He probably had a sixth sense it was coming and deliberately hurt himself. Horses remind me of a line in one of my favorite songs: "She says my Sh** is deep seated; that I get into accidents on purpose just so I can be late."

I find the formfulness of British racing more than a little creepy. It is just bizarre to me that these horses can be privately trained up to the first race of the season and yet the books seem to have the winner more often than not. I would also think it sort of sucks that so many of the big races go to so few owners.

Nice win by Rafeal Hernandez in American Turf stakes(grad 2).

From Leading Fairmount Park jockey to Churchill and a stakes win on Derby day.

he's getting more rides from top trainers, guy wokred his arse off at fairmount park, even though he was top jock who got all the leading trainers mounts. Wesley Ward asked him to go to KY and Fla, and he's had a really good year so far.

Does anyone else love the "nicks" grades for breeding? I follow bloodhorse on twitter, and I always sort of laugh when true nicks throws out their A+ and A++ rated horses winning stakes. Just makes me wonder how many of the top nicks don't win top stakes. And based on how they do their ratings, doesn't the result of a C grade breeding winning a graded stakes push up the breeding grade?

I would just love for them to put out their full stats.

I'm so lost on betting but want to make this more interesting. Any advice on who to bet on?

how much do you want to spend? Since you are just beginning I would keep it simple. WPS bets based on overlays in the odds- so looking at horses who are at higher odds than they likely should be.

Exactas ( first and second place in same race) are also relatively easy and cheap and usually have good return on Derby day.

For the Derby, the biggest overlay I see is Upstart. His numbers are near the top of the field, but he is currently in closer company with total longshots on the odds boards. put him in an exacta with some of the favorites. You can "box" them, so as long as the first and second place come from your pool of picks, you win. PLace a WPS show on a decent plodder that will likely hit the board at a decent price- such as a Frammento, Keen Ice, War Story act.

Any help?

Full disclosure, my picks are not exactly excelling so far today

Not much...maybe like 20 bucks spread on some longshots. My book just isn't showing anything other than the odds for the winner. How do you find out what a place or show or a trifecta or something pays? Is there a formula or anything?

I'm sure it's there it's just a bad format. Took me forever to figure out I had to choose Churchill Downs race 10 or whatever. You think it would just have KENTUCKY DERBY in big letters or something to be easy to find.

I just spent $30. Put $10 on the 10 horse to win and $10 on the 5 horse. Then I bet a $5 exacta box with the 8 and 10.

Also put in $12 on the 3 to win and a $4 exacta box with 3 and 8 for a buddy. Spent $50 on two people.

it is race 11, BTW...

$20 bucks - the exotic payout combos are usually shown on the network and online betting places about the time the horses are in the paddock for a race. They will also show you the amount in each pool that is placed on individual horses. Usually the PS pools follow relatively in line with w pool, but occasionally a horse that has high win odds will have a substantial amount of money placed on them in the show pool. I would throw out an exacta on 2-3 horses with a good chance to win that are not named AP or Dortmund, and if neither hits the board 1-2, then that will likely pay out a ton.

Has there been more of a horse for course than Tonalist? At Belmont..money. Elsewhere? not so much….

Also, speaking of horses liking a course, glad that Water Hole didn't breakdown. She looked completely discombobulated early on at the back of the pack. I thought once or twice her hind end was going to go out from under her.

He didn't run a stride. Finished last.

I do wonder of those fragile feet didn't appreciate the track today.
