Anyone seen a rise in these types? Used to be able to challenge them and have some banter but this year I've been shut down quickly. Even one letting me know it was his court.
Strange, to say the least. I'm not one for needlessly ragging on them but when they need to tighten it up they'll usually allow coaches to have a little word with them here and there, politely.

Had a couple that were just flat out dick bags this year. One guy kept hammering us about the coaches box and being behind the 2nd line. Not kids, coaches which is unusual. You'll get some jawing when you get on the field, but not when you're between the two lines typically. Guy was relentless. We even had the kids behind the benches.

Nah, basketball.
In the past it's taken a lot to get play to stop and a zebra to talk to you about how they were in charge. Usually just ignore you or get a quick word when the whistle was out of their mouth.

Basketball is a tough sport to ref, but it really sounds like the crews have had enough of coaches being assholes (and seeing it trickle down to kids). Not you necessarily, but they are going to treat you all the same.

They need to learn just to ignore it. It's how I was taught when I was officiating. It isn't hard, but they want the court now and act like no one else in the gym knows the rules. It's been a little annoying from a coaching perspective this year to say the least.

LHSAA has some of the worst officials in the state. They're not only bad, but they're some of the laziest and non-caring officials around, especially in the Monroe area.

Worse in Central Louisiana. It's become a problem with them lying to get more money too.
Best refs I've dealt with in a while was in Lafayette.

I agree with you on this. Refs in Lafayette are pretty good. Baton Rouge has a pretty good Association also.

A good official, for any sport, has to be able to ignore the typical comments from off the field/court. There are a few rules/calls that are off limits to criticism and both the coaches and officials know what those are. Even for those, though, there has to be a little grey area. Let the coach have his say and then just move on. If it continues on the same subject, that's when the official needs to put an end to it in one of various ways. The only area where the line is cut and dry is when the comments become personal, then there are two options. It stops immediately either with the coach still at the game or not.

Exactly. I've deserved a tongue lashing from an official before and I know when it's coming. This year it's been much quicker and honestly for nothing out of ordinarily questioning or disagreement with a call.

Are you experiencing this with veteran officials or new guys, or both?

I can handle them making bad judgement calls. Nobody is perfect and I have reffed / umped before so I know it's a difficult job.
What gets me is when they don't know the rules.
Perfect example... This weekend at a basketball game, had a kid crossing half court. He had crossed the half court line with the ball, but both feet were behind the line. He got pressure and backed up.. The ref called back court. I argued that it was not back court bc all 3 points must cross but he argued it was just the ball. I quit arguing bc I thought maybe there was some rule change I didn't know about. He was certainly wrong though.
Baseball last summer, I have a kid on 3rd. Past ball takes a crazy hop and somehow gets over the fence. The ump forces my kid to go back to third base and says they don't get to advance. I argued this point big time, but lost. The ump on the bases told me I was correct, but didn't have the balls to make the right call with the home plate ump.

Wow, that's awful.
My attitude on judgement calls is let the dissenting coach say his peace and ignore it. If you react to my disagreement, I'm going to keep on you. Sorry.
