Well if they want to style for a real good season every 5-8 years then he is a good hire for them to stay another 10 years.....

No. Actually the Glen Mason comparison is apt.
Over a similar career arc, Mason has like one less winning season, one less bowl win, and two fewer 10-win seasons. And Mason had to rebuild two crap programs, and got a 10-win season out of both of them. Ferentz took over a stable program from a longtime predecessor and more or less has had the same success as him. There is almost literally no difference between Iowa now and Iowa 30 years ago. You could actually argue that they were better 30 years ago.
My point is this: the only difference between Ferentz and a coach who we'd all agree is largely forgettable is he'll pull a major bowl game out his arse about every 6 years that one year the entire rest of his conference is down. And he's coach for life but the other guy is a footnote.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a good move? Iowa could just as easily become Iowa state or Purdue or Kansas. They all have access to about the same amount of recruits.

Iowa is undefeated and ranked 16.
Won their division last year.
they were eviscerated by Stanford in the Rose Bowl, but they made millions just for showing up. I think they got $17 million.

Iowa was in ruins when Ferentz took over. Fry had stayed just a little too long and Iowa was like a one win team. Within 3 years Kirk had them in the Orange Bowl against USC. Iowa has been pretty solid ever since.
There have been some years where we've underachieved, and Iowa fans have been pissed, but it seems the ship is right again.
Go ahead and compare Iowa's seasons to others. He's had more Top 10 finishes, more "BCS" bowls, and more success since the turn of the century than Nebraska. Iowa looks around at what happened at Nebraska and K-State and a few other places and recognizes what a bad hire can do to a program.
What has changed? Brand new football facilities, led to much better recruiting classes, lead to last season's success. This year looks very promising too.
We have a term for what is going on, "New Kirk" is here now. "New Kirk" isn't as stodgy as old Kirk. New Kirk takes chances and dials up some razzle dazzle now and then.
It was a good move that adds stability to the program. The recruiting cycle is 6 years, putting KF out 10 years shored that up for a guy that is 61. Iowa sent the message he will retire here. The key is not the length or the money, it's the buyout, which was not disclosed. Few of us think KF will coach to the end of the contract.

I thought the same thing, but he is solid for now.

Not even close.
Glen Mason was 16 games under .500 for Minnesota in conference play. Ferentz is 16 games over .500 in conference play and that includes his first couple of years of taking over a terrible team.
Ferentz has been to three BCS bowls and won one of those. Mason never sniffed a BCS bowl.
Ferentz has won two B1G titles and a West title. Again, Mason never sniffed a title.
Ferentz has had five top 10 finishes, Mason only had one.

Another thing about Iowa - their S&C coach makes more than 29 FBS head coaches. Even Cochran at Bama doesn't make as much.

Even still, he'll be 71 in 2026. That's absurd
And then Iowa will give him a five-year extension.
Posted on 9/6/16 at 4:31 pm to Cap Crunch
If he stays that long that gives Iowa a total of 2 coaches from 1979-2016.

Agree, Mason isn't even a close comparison, plus isn't half the person Ferentz is.
I've always really liked Iowa, but in all honesty, it's not the easiest place to win.
Hayden Fry is a legend at Iowa, and Ferentz is basically the same coach. Solid most years, a few random down years, and a few random years where they challenge the top.

I guess, but he's at best, their third most successful coach out of their last 7. It's not like they would be missing out on a lot if they took a chance.

put on your Walter Mitty hat.
you are a great coach at Northern Iowa and you win the AA national championship for the 2nd year in a row.
You hire an agent. You have solid offers from Iowa, UC-Berkeley & Rutgers, the State U of NJ.
Rutgers is sitting on top of premier Catholic league high school football and plays in the big 10. They have been down so long that a co-championship in a so-what league is looked upon as their big moment.
UC-Berkeley is the #1 public university in the USA and close to some big time high school ball and a short plane ride to Southern CA QBs.
Iowa has had no five star high school guys in a decade. They are a cut below Rutgers in academics.
Choose.

He has a good season every 4-5 years, which is about as long as it takes his 2-3 star recruits to develop.
Iowa isn't going to be a National Contender every year. He produces some good O-Line talent and has a beastly agent for sure.

How many big games has he won in his entire career?

He's not that good to not take a chance on someone else.
That salary is lazy AD playing it safe.
And Iowa was solid way before Kirk.
15 years before Kirk
From 1981 - 1998.
3 Rose Bowls
2 Peach
3 Holiday
2 Sun
2 Alamo
1 Gator
15 years with Kirk
1 Rose Bowl
2 Orange
2 Alamo
4 Outback

I am ok with giving his agent an award for job well done.
Posted on 9/6/16 at 10:49 pm to Cap Crunch
All that money and every 4-5 years they win 9-10 games and he steals a Big 10 coach of the year award from a more deserving Ohio State coach. Oddly enough OSU hasn't won that award since 1979
