If you don't call the TO, the clock stops at 2:00 for the 2-minute warning. You still have the TO, but you're also a play behind the scenario above
By calling the timeout at 2:01, Payton dared Harbaugh to be aggressive. It worked.

I had to SMH at my brother who text me asking why SP took that timeout before the 2 minute warning.
You should have seen the Saints Board. Many many were blasting Payton. Guess they all go by the Les Miles school of playing not to lose.

shite, Aikman and Buck were dumbfounded by the TO before the Hartley kick to tie it. You don't save your TOs until after the 2-minute warning. You use them so you have as much time as possible on the back end of the 2-minute mark.

Does anyone really expect Kaep to be some visceral, heady QB?
He's still has a lot to learn as a NFL QB.

He's no Alex Smith.

Kaep has one of the highest wonderlic scores in the nfl for qbs. I know it means nothing but surprised me.

I meant that we'd have had to use two timeouts on the drive. Instead of just the one before the two minute warning.

It was a bad play, but some are making it out more than it was. It's not like he just trotted out of bounds. The kid was thinking he could get the first down and trying to get it and got cutoff last second.
He was 3 or 4 yds short. U have to believe that was basically a designed QB run so u would have to believe that the intent would be that he was to stay in bounds to force saints to take a TO.

Still used one timeout.
It's got little to do with the number of timeouts and more to do with making them pass, which you already know they will do and will be ready for.
Also, running the ball is safer. By putting them in a position in which you ultimately make them pass, there's also a higher chance of a turnover.
That's what I've taken out of it anyway.

It ended up not mattering, really. The Saints' final play from scrimmage ended with :15 left, and they ran off 12 seconds and called their final timeout. 12 seconds is plenty long for the Saints to spike it (week 2).

That timeout saved exactly 1 second at the cost of a timeout. The next play was an incomplete pass so the clock would have stopped anyway.
You do realize the only reason they threw the ball on the next down was because they knew the clock was stopping after the play no matter what they did? Clearly you can't be stupid enough to think they would have tried to throw if Payton let the clock go to the 2 minute warning.
They would have run on second down and Payton would have had to use the timeout then.
Either scenario winds up with 3rd down, ~1:55 on the clock, and the Saints having 1 TO left
