Jason La Canfora: Too many bad teams and awful QB play are why NFL ratings are declining

Any camera angle that panned across the upper deck in any number of stadiums Sundays confirmed that fact. The issues with ratings are well-documented. It's become convenient to blame that phenomenon, at least in part, on the ongoing issues of player demonstrations but now, nearly a season-and-a-half since Colin Kaepernick first took a knee, I'm not buying it. There's some protesting going on, without a doubt, but it's fans protesting the product being put on the football field, I believe, moreso than any pronounced reaction to a handful of players displaying their Constitutional rights before kick-off.

This downturn in the number of eyeballs watching closely every Sunday and Monday and Thursday is much more directly related, in my opinion, to the fact that the number of quarterbacks you would pay big bucks to see in a game with no rooting interest seems to be shrinking by the week. It's a by-product of the number of teams who fail to play anything close to attractive football, and who haven't found or developed a skill player who would garner a second look. It's a factor of yet another weekend when injuries ravaged the already-depleted QB position, and America was treated to the likes of guys like Matt Moore, Drew Stanton, and Cody Kessler playing in games that count in the standings, to go with the likes of Brett Hundley and Case Keenum and Mitchell Trubisky and C.J. Beathard who have already been thrust into action due to injury or the ineffectiveness of others.

The NFL has altered the rules and tilted the field for the offense over the past few decades with rule changes and points of emphasis. There's nothing more they can do to subsidize scoring. Problem is, the way some of these have been constructed and coached, it really doesn't matter. Far too many teams and far too many quarterbacks are simply too hard to watch – or at least watch regularly – and it says here that has more to do with the sustained ratings dip than people boycotting because of anthem demonstrations or anything else.

Television executives are paying for a decade of primetime "NFC EAST SHOWDOWN!" and Cowboys/Giants/Patriots/Packers/Steelers vs. other.

Now teams like the Jaguars, Titans, Bills, Rams, Vikings, etc. are contenders, and casual fans know about 2 players on each team and never watched any of their games, so why should they watch?

Without Fantasy Football, where would the NFL be today?

I don't need Jason whoever to tell me what's wrong with the NFL

the fans have been trying to yell it for the past decade, and they don't fu?king care what the fan thinks, so a lot of us have moved on....see ya

same thing happened to NASCAR, the NFL , and unfortunately my beloved tigers is a horrid game day experience.....but no big deal fans are moving on

Yeah, you know that CBS banked on Seahawks/Giants being its "big draw" for the 4:25 spot yesterday and then had to scramble for "Steelers vs. other" yet again because of the backlash.

The kneeling and all of that stuff hasn't stopped me from watching, but I know it was a factor for a lot of my order family members to stop watching.

And I just checked next week's schedule:

Fox late doublheader: "NFC EAST SHOWDOWN!" to the entire nation with no other games on Fox at that time.

NBC SNF: Steelers vs. Other

A lot of people at my church yesterday told me when I said I was going home to watch the Saints that they were done with the NFL because of this stuff.

Of course, most of them were older white males who didn't like the Saints anyway and aren't in TV's target demographic.

There's a whole bunch of reasons why ratings are down, QB play is one of them. To insinuate it's the only reason is being naive.

That’s on coaching. Take that money, invest in OL’s and RB’s. Plenty of game managing QBs. Or, draft a spread QB and try something different. NFL coaches are too scared to try something against the norm. Owners just recycle the same coaches, and their understudies

The officiating is completely terrible. Every third play is a flag or an instant replay review. It slows the game down and kills any tempo.

I prefer review to wrong.

Cut down number of franchises by 12 teams.

Then you'll have enough talent on most teams.

I don't think officiating has gotten worse. We're just aware of it now with crystal clear HD super slow mo viewing ability.

I should clarify. It's not terrible but just over officiated. The pace of play seems unbearable to me.

This is the truth..

It isn't just quarterback play.

There are so many reasons why that would be difficult to articulate over this forum..

I watch the game ever week because I love it. I still sense the many problems facing it's future and the likelihood the game is regressing downward after peaking at the turn of the century. Just my opinion of course.

I agree with this.

I am more bothered with commercials after touchbacks, injury commercials when the player is already off the field before they go to commercial, and commercials with like 5 seconds left to go in the quarter when you know you're going to commercial again one play from now.

That being said, the last 30 seconds of the Raiders/Chiefs TNF game was more annoying than the Time Out Derby at the end of a close NCAA Tournament basketball game.

I agree. My dad said this to me a few weeks ago before the protests. There are too many teams, talent is stretched, injuries compound this. Leads to a bad product.
