With Harden on the verge of back-to-back MVP seasons and given his stats over the past 5 seasons, is there any doubt that Harden has established himself as:

1. The 2nd greatest SG of all-time
2. A top 10 player in NBA history
3. The game’s best player today

he will be top 15 after he gets his finals mvp this year. He is already top 15 in metrics BPM, per, ws/48 etx. And the wild thing is that he hasn’t even peaked yet.

None of those if he doesn't win a ring. I know GS is a huge barrier but to be a top 3 player you have to have a ring.

It's not fair, but it's more fair in basketball than any other sport since there are less players on the court at one time

And bird. And magic. Etx etx. Unless you are a lebron or Jordan chances are you compare more than a little unfavorably.

Just another "Gunner".

When I was in 7th grade, guys who shot without conscience, gunners.
Example from my youth:
Paul arizen. Phila warriors. Jump shooter.
Averaged in 20's for career. One NBA champ ring as #2 scorer behind teammate center Neil Johnston.
He was born too soon, before 3 point shot. His whole game was shooting from corner.

Like harden, useless on defense.

Since arizen won a ring (over bill Russell and Bob petit) he's ahead of harden, forever.

The guy is so bad on defense that we have people arguing that he is a good defender now, on the basis of him being good at one thing (post defense). Harden is a bad defender you can hide now, 2 years ago he was an atrocious defender who made no effort. Progress I guess

He has been legitimately good in the post for about two years now. However, I agree with the rest of your points. He is someone that won’t be completely useless when switched on to but the defense is designed for him not work.

Now having said that, who gives a frick that he isn’t an elite defender when he is putting up 36 a night?

You'll care more after Houston is excused from the playoff.

If he retired today he would be a borderline top 50 player all time. Maybe.

Most likely not.

Give him 5 more years then we can discuss it.

Harden has the stats and accolades to be up there with the greatest players of all-time.

The one thing he needs to truly cement his status among the best to ever play is this:
