any top athlete list without Bo Jackson is worthless.
Everybody knows how awesome he was at baseball and football, but did you realize he qualified for the US olympic team for the 60 yard dash, and also played semi-pro basketball in L.A. after his serious hip injury before coming back to play for the Chi Sox in the MLB.

This question has been bouncing around, and given the time frame of the Olympics going on right now and all the media gasbags have to jump on the hottest "story".
He is possibly the greatest Olympian. He is certainly in THAT conversation, but the answer is an emphatic NO!
He is not on a par with:
Jordan
Babe Ruth
Joe Montana
Joe DiMaggio
Mickey Mantle
Ted Williams
Jim Brown
Muhammed Ali
Jerry Rice
Etc, Etc, Etc, Etc.
Don't let the media sway you - they are so into the big "story" of the day . . . like the time they claimed that USC was going for their 3rd straight National Championship.
Six months from now, Michael Phelps will be nowhere to be seen on the landscape. It's swimming. You do it to keep from drowning. Get real.

No. He certainly is dominant in his sport, but not a top 5 male athlete in history. Id take a decathalon competitor any day over phelps as a greater athlete. now if the question was about most dominating at his sport Id name him 3rd behind Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.

He is more dominant than Tiger and Jordan.

DOMINANT? YES
BUT THE FACT THAT HE COMPETES IN A WEAK COMPETITION FIELDS DIMINISHES HIS "ELITE" STATUS. HE IS ELITE YES. BUT MJ, RUTH, MONTANA, TIGER ELITE? NO

Maybe he won't be mentioned as much in the media, but it's not like he won't be doing anything. He's held some of his world records for over 8 years, since he was 15 years old. I think that's a pretty big accomplishment.

Again since Swimming is objective we can compare his times to swimmers from past years.
7 Medals 7 WRs speaks for itself.

Any guy who can go into a major sporting event and completely dominate without any apparent threat deserves a spot in History. You look at what he does and how he can put numbers on the baord, even after having only a 25 min. break inbetween races. I gurantee you almost no one on this board could swim a 200 m breast sprint, then do it again in less then half an hour. Our asses would be glued to the couch watching ESPN eating junk food.
Long Story short, yes. He is in my top 5, With Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali... and I can't decide right now the other 2.

It is too hard to compare 'athletic' ability.
If you are going purely off how great of an 'ATHLETE' a person is, then most on the list will be basketball players. Basketball easily requires the most 'athletic' people in the world.
Pro-football players and the top couple tennis players in history also display obscene amounts of athleticism.
As far as swimming goes, Phelps' body is made for it. He is as good as it gets.
My top 5 (quickly off the top of my head...in no particular order):
Michael Phelps
Lebron James
Michael Jordan
Roger Federer
Herschel Walker
I'm solid on the first 4 I listed. I'm not completely sold on Walker, but he is coming to mind at this point.

Your a fricken idiot with Arod at 1. Are you serious???? I think I would put Deon Sanders ahead of Arod as a better "Athlete". Football/Baseball/Unbelievable Speed. Phelps has to be in your top five. How old are you 12? You sound like those kids in the Little League World Series that 90% of the team's favorite player is either Derek Jeter or Arod. Lose the man-crush goggles. Give me a break. Arod is way down the list.

Definitely not. He'll be in commercials and ads all over the place.

That's a really stupid argument. It's football, what do you do it for? Basketball? Baseball?

How the hell can someone list a freaking BASEBALL player in the top 5 greatest athletes ever?
Also, how the hell can someone put Mike Tyson in that list when he isn't even in the top 10 boxers of all time?
Dumbasses...

My top 5:
1. Michael Phelps
2. Lance Armstrong
3. Herschel Walker
4. Ted Williams
5. Wayne Gretzky
Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson are basically tied for 5, really.
And I love the people talking about how Phelps has no competition at these Olympics....you people watch swimming for one week every 4 years and are suddenly experts on the sport. It's hysterical. Go back to drooling over 17 year old high school recruits who come to your school to play a game. Leave the talking about actual sports to people who know about actual sports.

Phelps has not even broken Spitz record yet, so why isn't Spitz on anyone's list of top athletes in history???
