When the NCAA ended the partial qualifier, Nebraska was dead as a program

And Pelini at least had some decent teams too and fired him for similar reasons.

They had a coach that could get them to the promised land.....but he didn't go to church every Sunday so they ran him out of town

Pelini was winning 8-10 games every year and competing for conference championships, and they fired him

I wanted Pelini gone but I didn't want a loser like Reilly to replace him.

Prop 48 set minimum standards and was enacted in 1986.

Nebraska from then accepted all partial qualifiers as the Big 8 had no rules against it - schools could decide on their own.

But the old SWC had never accepted partial qualifiers.

When the Big 8 and SWC merged, the member schools voted 11-1 to only accept 4 partial qualifiers (and they couldn't play until they eventually qualified) - with the lone dissent being Nebraska.

It was a power struggle between Texas and Nebraska and Nebraska claimed it wasn't about academics but about bringing Nebraska down.

It worked.

Frank Solich went:

9-4
12-1
10-2
10-2
11-2
7-7
9-3 (and they fired him for that)

Saying: "we're not going to conceed the Big12 to Texas."

So they hired Callahan who went 27-22 and 15-17 in the Big12.

Now Nebraska just conceeds the Big10 ever year.

Yep, that's about it.

Don't know what they were thinking running him out of there.

They cited declining recruiting classes at the time.

I don't understand why they couldn't have just thrown money at a top notch Texas/California connected guy to be recruiting coordinator under Solich.

They should hire Tressel. ETA--But do it now because he's 65.

The Big Ten West is weaker than the Big Ten East. They are not that far away from being relevant. If they recruit nationally more by having the lowest academic standards in the big ten they can win.

If you got money and commitment you are never out of the game. Nebraska has both. As much as I hate the Bugeaters they will be relevant again with the right coach. Riley isn't the guy.

And to add, wasn't too long ago, pre-Saban, that Alabama sucked. They were not relevant in any conversation. But they had money and a commitment to winning, eventually they got the right coach to go with it.

The state of Alabama has talent and proximity to states with talent (Florida/Georgia/Mississippi/Louisiana). Nebraska, not so much.

Also, you guys under-rate the BIG West. The West has held it's own against the East, it just doesn't have the flash names of OSU and UM. PSU coming on has been very recent. Better than the SEC East does against the SEC West.
