This is where there is an argument for it being a sport. I don't really follow it but I assume people with superior vision and reflexes have an advantage. Are there any other physical skills that are useful besides bladder control?
They have skills unique to their profession just like any other athlete. If it were just going fast and hanging a left, then everyone could do it.

Wait, so the equipment determines the outcome? It sounds a lot less like a sport if the humans involved have minimal impact over winning and losing.
Like any sport, equipment is used and there are rules to regulate the equipment. I look at my argument the opposite way. The cars are so equal that there is a premium on driver skill in order to be successful. All of the cars are fast, its up to the driver to know the nuances of the car and track and be able to run a faster lap than the next guy. Based on your argument, baseball may not be a sport because they regulate the bats so much in college that it has had a huge impact on the game. They have made the bats so weak that it puts a premium on the batter to make contact rather than have a guy up there swinging a club that can send the ball 500 feet without hitting the sweet spot.
BTW Hugo, thanks for the anchor...Chicken has a short leash these days!!

My opinion is that the car is the "athlete". the driver is not the one going 200 mph, the car is. Yes, he is controlling it, but the car is the one with the special skill.
I know this is not really an equal comparison, but is someone playing a video game considered a "sport"? They are controlling something they would otherwise not be able to do...

IMO, Sports are competitions where the winner is determined by the competitors' actual performance in the event. Events where winners are determined by judging or some other subjective means are not truly sports because the winner is ultimately not determined by the competitors themselves.
Cheerleading and gymnastics, for example, are athletic competitions but not sports.
Athletics don't have to sports and sports don't necessarily have to be athletic. Bowling is a sport, even though the physical condition of the competitors has very little to do with it.

And to answer the question, NASCAR is a sport.

If nascar is a sport, then playing a racing videogame in a sauna is a sport.

I consider it a race

This thread is dumb.
Anything involving competition can be classified as a sport. So yes NASCAR is a sport.
So is chess, arm wrestling, staring contest, golf, company sales competitions, skeet shooting, race up the stairs, coon hunting, spelling bee, horse shoes, game of I spy, call of duty competition, football...etc.

Ive went to the nascar fantasy driving challenge and to me it is a sport. Those guys are pinned against the steering wheel and those cars are pretty tough to turn. On top of that you have to know the ins and outs of your car. Not to mention going 100 mph is really fast on the interstate. Double that and try to keep pace without bumping and wrecking racing 1 foot behind a car.

I think it's a skill, not necessarily a sport. I think golf and poker are also skills. You can be an athlete to participate, but not necessary.

It is a competitive activity, but is not a sport. That is not meant to diminish it, or the difficulty or skill.
Horse racing is not a sport, either.

It is a sport.
Besides the drivers, the pit crews are mostly former college athletes. The athletic skills that it takes to perform a pit stop is impressive.
Many athletes of other sports have said that after driving a NASCAR they consider it a sport.

sport [spawrt, spohrt] Show IPA noun 1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
Any competitive activity that involves any kind of skill is a sport by definition.

It's all about a person's individual definition of "sport". The poster above stated that he doesn't consider certain competitions sports, if they are judged events. That's his personal definition. I disagree with it, but that's neither here nor there.

If you have to ask than No. It's like if you're at a bar and turn to your friend and ask if a chick is hot, chances are you're drunk and she's not. At this point I would say nascar is 1 step above bowling, darts, and billiards and 2 steps below football, baseball, basketball, and hockey.

I'll buy that.
It really is more of a team sport when you include the pit crews who are athletically competing for time.

Yes it's a sport. You get points, trophies, competition, people in the stands, etc.
ETA: Some racers even lose 15+ pounds from all the sweating, they have to drink water, gatorade, powerade just like other athletes.

A spelling bee gets all of those things, too.
