Is Michigan the worst team in the playoffs ?

I know they are the 1 seed, but of all 4 teams they are the least impressive to me.
I would not be surprised to see them lose by 3 or 4 scores.
They are mediocre offensively and all BIG 10 defenses are always overrated by playing in an inept offensive conference.
Bet big on Bama over Michigan even if this isn't a classic Bama team.

I would say yes. Their oline is pretty beat-up, and McCarthy has regressed

Washington is pretty clearly the worst team in the playoff, but I think they actually have a pretty good matchup in Texas given UTs one real weakness is in the secondary.

Did you see the Iron Bowl?
Sort of a late revelation that Georgia was living off rep in a god awful dreadful SEC East.

I think this is the first field in a few years that you can legitimately say that all 4 teams can win the title, I don’t think Michigan is the worst though. They’re the least sexy in terms of style.

McCarthy might be the worst QB in the playoffs.
I'm confused as to how FSU gets penalized for potential subpar QB play by the backups and winning via defense and rushing while Michigan gets praised for it.
McCarthy has 355 yards of passing total in their 3 games against ranked opponents, and don't forget the Penn State game where they didn't even need for him to do a damn thing for the entire second half.
McCarthy isn't what all the pundits think he is and their usage of him signals that.

I agree, but I just saw some nerd talk on mgoblog that makes me feel better.

Michigan is not staring down the Soon To Be Philadelphia Eagles this time around. Georgia looked kind of off kilter much of the season and lost to Alabama, which means the SP+ rankings of the teams in the playoff look like this:
1. Michigan
6. Texas
7. Alabama
11. Washington
Texas is 7.5 points adrift of Michigan. Alabama is 8.4. Washington is 13.7. I do not quite believe this, largely because Penn State ranks 4th and Michigan is getting credit for stuffing them in a locker when pretty much any top-ten defense would have done the same. Vegas installed Michigan as a mere two-point favorite over Alabama, so they don't either. But this is a huge departure from what usually happens these days, which are lines that hew so closely to SP+ projections that Bill Connelly occasionally crabs about it on Twitter. Usually the numbers are good enough to get Vegas in line, but maybe not when the numbers would install Michigan more than a TD favorite right after Alabama beat Georgia.
Or you could visualize it like this:

Every single way you can systematically evaluate college football teams has Michigan a sizable favorite to win the national title. Connelly's numbers have it 50/50 between Michigan and the field. The reasons you would not believe those numbers range from misunderstandings of the way Michigan plays football (with maximum contempt for most opponents) to legitimate but probably not sufficient to close the gap. That latter is primarily Zak Zinter's injury.

Your first time watching an iron bowl in JHS? Bama has lost that game before and won the natty a month later.
Did you see Michigan beat Maryland by one score?
Washington beat Arizona state by one score?
Texas best TCU by one score?
Why are we only critiquing a close win for Bama?
To answer the OP I think any of the 4 teams could win it all. I think stylistically Alabama probably poses the biggest problem for Michigan, and Washington probably poses the biggest problem for Texas. Bama rolls out 6-7 dudes on the defensive line that go 300+ and have two first round corners and two elite edge rushers. Like Georgia, I think there will be a lot of unproductive drives for Michigan.
Washington has a good QB and really good wide receivers, which should scare anyone in a one off football game. Texas to me is the most complete team in the tournament, but certainly beatable by any of the other 3.

I love you, man, but:

Bunk! I just don't like the praise for McCarthy and yet we haven't seen him do much at all.

I assume you watched the Oregon game and none of UW the rest of the second half of the year

I know, I know. Something is up this last month, one of those things is he twisted his ankle against PSU. I just think they are calling insanely conservative games because that's how Michigan rolls, not because JJ sucks. They let JJ sling it last year against OSU and it paid off.

I think all 4 teams are flawed. But WA has potential to explode, offensively, Michigan really does not. That's why I would put them 4th.

Its their most recent performance and they looked good.

Texas is the worst and least-deserving team in the playoffs
Posted on 12/4/23 at 1:40 pm to BhamDore
All Bama needs to do is get a couple of touchdown lead and force Harbaugh to start throwing, and then it really gets ugly. You let them conrol the line of scrimmage and get in to a ground and pound game, they have a chance. Bama's real weakness is the lines, so I'm sure UM will force the run early and often.

The dude has a strong af arm, but everything about the offensive attack seems so conservative and elementary.
Posted on 12/4/23 at 1:43 pm to The Egg
Agreed. By far the worst QB in the playoffs. I also think Michigan's defense is really overrated because of who they play and the lack of elite offensive players in the Big 10.
Washington has a decent chance against Texas, but Michigan has zero chance against Alabama.
They may get 20 points if some things go right for them, but 20 points isn't enough to win in the playoffs.
