Cricket may be number 2 in terms of overall fans, but I don't think it has much of an international following in countries that weren't British colonies post 1900.
Regardless, it has 2 billion followers... that being said India skews the numbers.

Try finding something on TV in India other than cricket... I couldn't get the Super Bowl in India but you could get Cricket matches from 1982.
India would have a very large soccer following if they were any good at soccer.

I agree with both of y'all on cricket. Their obsession is insane. I agree. There is no way basketball is even close to soccer over there, though.

For the record Manny Pacquiao is also probable more popular than Lebron too.
I name dropped Pacquiao earlier in the thread when Lester Earl was referencing an athlete's "brand." Of course he didn't respond though. Pacquiao is #1 Tiger is #2.

2. Ronaldo's brand is larger than Messi's. He is a star in the most basic sense of the world. He is outgoing and outrageous on and off the pitch. Messi keeps to himself and isn't the flashy player CRon is.
It is really hard to judge. When you talk to people or watch TV they're both so huge. You're right that Ronaldo is way bigger in terms of social media, etc though. If you said pick one, then I agree that you're correct.

Women, metros, and hero worshippers probably tip the scale in Ronaldo's favor though.
Meh, there are a ton of people that appreciate what Ronaldo brings on the pitch. His movement off the ball seems to be as good as anyone in the world. His runs, cuts, and use of his pace and athleticism are brilliant. His footwork is truly excellent (and not just the fancy the fancy moves). There is a lot to appreciate about his game and not just that he can rip shots.
I think Hispanics are bigger about Messi. I do not really think that makes up the fanbases one way or the other.
Both Ronaldo and Messi have millions of great fans and morons (you know, like Rantards).

Yup. I don't think there's really much doubt that Messi has been the best player in the world over the last 4 years or so, but that's not really the question.

lebron has twice as many followers, that is very telling; its not even close.
according to the fact that he has been a global superstar for 15 years, was arguably the most dominant athlete ever for over a decade, first athlete to earn a billion, went through a scandal that was covered around the globe.
lebron is just now becoming an iconic athlete. tiger has been one for over 10 years.

yeah, you are missing the fact that my grandmother is not on twitter. she knows tiger, not lebron.

Cristiano Ronaldo has one of the best skill sets (maybe the best) of any player I've ever seen. That said, over the last few years, Messi has definitely been better.

im debating 2012, not 1999 when lebron was in elementary school. thanks.

Why do you say that. He makes a ton of money but when you look at things like the popularity of soccer and even twitter follower (soccer 10 of the top 20). Kaka and Ronaldo are the most followed athletes on earth.

He was talking about name recognition. Everyone who knows anything about soccer adores his game, but his point was that even people who don't care about soccer adore him too. Messi is in international icon on the pitch, but its hard to say he's one off.

no shite. but that is why jordan is bigger than dwight howard. or are you saying dwight howard is bigger than jordan?

I agree with that as well. I despise Ronaldo but he is the clear #2 and he could be more of a complete threat as an individual offensive player because he is more athletic, has a better weaker foot, and is better in the air. I was mainly saying Ronaldo vs. Messi, and I think Messi is still a better player.
Beast is exactly right at what I was getting at as well.

(#2) Kaka: 80,200,000
(#1) Cristiano Ronaldo: 90,600,000
That says it all. The guy retired forty years ago and he's still extremely popular.

You either love or hate him. Ronaldo is a polarizing figure. He has the second most Twitter followers in the world, only second to Real Madrid teammate, Kaka.
twitter is not the best indicator of popularity.
granted its better than saying someone buys more video games, but considering the age range of its users its hard to say definitively those guys are more popular.
