Yes, I will use that to support my position of, "there are soccer players and American athletes who are wildly popular internationally."

Just from quickly reading through the last two pages of this post, I can tell that the people arguing against a soccer player being the most popular athlete in the world are completely ignorant and misinformed.

Oh and that tid bit
quote:

A basketball game was the most watched individual sports game of all-time.

1. Basketball is a teamsport.
2. This is complete fabrication.

The 2006 World Cup final was watched by 715 million people.

Other than an olympic opening ceremony, that is the most watched sporting event ever.

Europe & hispanic nations are the only ones that care about soccer
-
a random Asian person; better chance he knows Lebron or Mossi?

random Austrailian: better chance of knowing Lebron or Mossi?

random American/Canadian: better chance of knowing Lebron or Mossi?
-
Yao did wonders in Asia as far as basketball interest. Everyone there knows who Lebron is.
-
you realize how many kids are on twitter?

and how many adults are not?
-
basketball gets more exposure worldwide, more frequently.
-
And how many of these matches can be seen from someone's sofa that does not live in a soccer hotzone?
-
ratings of the world cup does not prove Ranaldo's popularity. Im sorry, but it doesnt. Just because people tune into the World Cup does not mean he is a recognizable figure.
-
Lebron plays 3-4 games in a week, most of the time on cable TV. It could be argued that his exposure is more widespread.
-
did they even play soccer in the Olympics?

I will take "Ignorant Things Lester Said" for 500, Alex.

No it wasn't. Only 600 million people watched at least a minute of the game. Only 260 million worldwide watched the entire game.

The very fact that soccertards don't even know who their most popular player is should tell you how stupid they are as a group.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ was shown in every single country and territory on Earth, including Antarctica and the Arctic Circle, generating record-breaking viewing figures in many TV markets around the world. The in-home television coverage of the competition reached over 3.2 billion people around the world, or 46.4 per cent of the global population, based on viewers watching a minimum of over one minute of coverage. This represents an eight per cent rise on the number of viewers recorded during the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™.

the highest average audience measured was for the final at 530.9 million, up five per cent on 2006.

These are only the single family home numbers (far from real numbers).

Get ye back, Godless heathen.

People that think Cristiano Ronaldo is a bigger star than Messi are wrong. I have a 45 year old buddy that is from west Texas and is basically a ditch digger. Knows nothing about soccer in any way, shape, or form and we are sitting at a bar one afternoon and el Classico is on...camera shows Messi....hey, that Messi is something, I don't ever watch soccer but I have seen highlights of him on espn, he's amazing.

Camera shows CR7...who is that fig?

Messi is far and away the greatest in the world. His star appeal has passed up Ronaldo.
