No, just answering the topical question and then defending the answer. That is what we were supposed to do right? Answer the question? Just checking.

The question is this: is Russell the worst #1 overall pick.

Here's an answer:

It's accepted that Russell is a bust, thus for anyone else to be considered a worst #1 overall pick, that player would also have to be a bust. Carter is not a bust, thus he can not be considered a worse #1 overall pick.

So my answer, without going on to other candidates, is that yes, Russell is the worst ever #1 overall pick.

Probably the most expensive.

only because it was fairly recent and salaries are up every year for rookies. Compare what Peyton got to what Stafford got.......

JR is easy to pile on right now but I don't think he's the worst # 1 overall at this point

Russell is a huge bust so far... and I doubt he turns it around based on everything we've seen of his NFL career to date

But it's fairly hard to consider anything any player or coach did set the organization back when they are being run into the ground by Al Davis more than anything else

You could give him an outstanding coach and good players and he'd run them out of town or bench them out of spite

I'd currently have him third behind Carter and Courtney Brown.

Fair enough.

As a Browns fan this one

Courtney Brown

hurt me personally so its my worst.

As top draft picks go Russell and Leaf (#2) are in a league of their own. I dont understand an NFL executive could have interviewed these guys then drafted them!!

Best example ever.

Bo Jackson is a bust, according to hojo.

A bust for Tampa Bay, not for the Raiders.

Yeah, there was a radio sports talk personality, as I recall, that had already dubbed Courtney Brown "the Quiet Storm" even before his first game. The Browns went through some serious growning pains those first years back. Tim Couch (#1), Courtney Brown (#1), and Gerard Warren (#3) three years in a row. None of those guys came close to living up to their potential.

So do you think that Reggie Lewis was a huge bust for the Celtics? How about Len Bias. Bust? Was Drazen Petrovic a bust for the Nets? None of those guys finished their contracts...

Len Bias' pick--one of the worst ever--for the Celtics' organization, most would agree his overdose set them back at least a decade. Lewis and Petrovic were established stars, so no, not bad picks.

I agree with Brown and Warren (we almost took Tomlinson with that pick ) but I'll always be a Tim Couch fan. He was a warrior for us.

BTW, I was in the Dome when he threw the hail mary!

Do you or do you not consider Bias to be a bust?

Yeah, with Couch, the argument as I remember it was whether they should take Couch or Akili Smith--that was the same draft that Donovan McNabb was in, but he really wasn't part of the conversation, interestingly enough. Couch performed as well as could have been expected given the young and inexperienced team he was working with.

Carter and Emtmann were injured, not busts

I consider it to be a bad pick--as does the entire Celtics organization--or was that not what the topic was about?

In retrospect, regardless of the reason for those guys underperforming or in Bias' case not performing at all, those picks turned out to be really bad ones for those organizations.

Hojo's moving the target around.

The initial question is whether Russell is the worst #1 overall pick in NFL history. Since Russell is considered a bust, the only players that can be worse than him are other busts.

He considers Carter to be a bust, though sensible and reasonable people don't consider FREAK injuries to be bust worthy (if a player has a an injury history and the team over looks that anyway, then yes, he is a bust if he gets hurt).

Hojo's limited worldview calls anyone who underperforms, for whatever reason, a bust.

Thus, he believes that death = bust.

na the worst overall pick was at the first nfl draft backin the 1930's. He never even played 1 down for the bears. Can't remember his name at the moment.
