You're assuming they sell.

Y'all realize tho that he has created the blueprint.

yes, MANY people can create blueprints. Even the superstars like LeBron who have been HUGE in popularity and the face of the NBA for over a decade. Even the most marketable shoes Jordan aren't a completely own brand, they partnered with nike.

If if he does well, and is able to sell his shoes, it's like he owns his own masters. This is a shoe companies biggest fear -- this shifts the needle/power out of their hands. I love the entrepreneurialship and the "swamp draining" but I really don't like how they went about it and I don't like Lavar so I'm confused

the reality is, its a dumb investment. he'd have to reach astronomical superstar status to make more money than frankly signing with a big brand. The entrepreneurship is smart, the issue is his choice of investment is poor.

Think of it this way, 5/10mil as an initial signing and he becomes a star? He's going to sign a 10mil+ annual contract with big brands. over 10 years, thats 100mil. @500 a pop, you'd have to sell 200,000 shoes to reach that number. I don't even think the Curry 3's sold that many and UA took a huge hit.

The roll out was very good, the prices are trash but there is now a model to replicate/tweak

Its going to end up being $496 with a big scratchout. NOW ON SALE FOR $49.99 at your local Kohls, Payless, Ross, TJ Maxx, etc. Instead of potentially making 100mil+ over 10 years, he's going to be losing that money.

Of course they hate it. Companies hate a shifting paradigm if they're benefiting greatly from the status quo. Why wouldn't they want to keep things exactly as they are indefinitely?

They're like "Frick stars thinking for themselves. Lets us think for you while we stuff our pockets. It's still more money than you've ever had so be happy and take it."

That's why I reject this idea that the shoe companies wouldn't rush to sign him today if they came crawling back. They'd rather have him in the fold and quell this type of thing from gaining any momentum.

Seems like if he wanted to frick with the shoe companies, he'd be selling these for way cheaper. I imagine it's pretty expensive for them to produce these though, which is why they'll ultimately fail.

That's why they are probably selling them at such a crazy price. I would bet that once he gets drafted (and they start using Lonzo's capital) that they'll drop the price. Be smart with YOUR money Lonzo.

They are hedging their empire on Lonzo being a superstar. If he fails, I don't ever see how the brothers could recover even if they are good because they are all now attached to daddy's hip.

That's a lot of pressure to put on a 20 year old

100% agree.

I had this weird Gut feeling that they may not even do private workouts for teams. Has any heard anything about which workouts he'll do ?

Nike does like 30 billion a year in sales with Lebron's line being around 340 million. Nike ain't worried about the Lavar Balls of the world.

Fiscally Nike will be fine. Id be more worried about the model if he does really well.

The Balls seem to be middle to upper middle class (they own a home in California so they got a little change) so it might be more feasible for them to gather the resources for a launch...as opposed to a kid from the hood.

Still what happens if more kids start ditching the so companies. They get a lot of their $ from the marketing the players do. This could eat at their core

I saw a Combine commercial and thought the same thing. There's no way LaVar will send him to Chicago. He may not even work out with teams.

Pay now and get a pair in November after they have been made with the money you paid now. Poors.

UnderArmour has put a small dent in their profits but the world is apparently supposed to be scared of LaVar Ball's "model".

true, but you'd think they'd have a better mind in terms of investment. issue is his head and arrogance will cost his son millions.

promise they won't, at least not initially coming into the league. they don't have the financial ability to do it. Maybe after 5 years when they sign a max contract worth 200mil+ and their name is big they'll have the resources, but by that time they're looking at contracts of 10mil+ annually by those companies. that's a RISKY decision to turn down.

There would be a higher % of these players being broke.

Judging from Lonzo's twitter timeline, Michael Bennett's said he's picking up a couple pair, as is Chad Johnson. Athletes seem to respect what they're doing.

As far as creating a sense that this is something to have, off to a decent start. All without spending a dime on advertising.

Nike spends over 3 billion dollars a year in marketing. I don't know if he'll succeed but he's gotten a fortune in free marketing.
