If Luka really did say he wasn’t coming back to Dallas, the Mavs handled it backwards

When it’s clear a player isn’t coming back, you leak that to the press and start with the he’s out of shape and doesn’t care about the team stuff. That way when you trade him he looks like a bad guy to your fans instead of you looking like a dumbass.
All Luka has to do now is say he loves Dallas and loved playing there, loves the fans and the community and everyone will turn on the Mavs management and not him.

Everyone in Dallas loves Luka. He never had the help he needed.

They’ve actually done a great job of drafting and made a few good trades. Which makes this even more bizarre.

How they didn't make this a bidding war, I'll never understand.

Kobe's agent made a deal with Kobe's marketing manager.

The trade talks were initiated by Dallas, league sources told ESPN, and began a few days ago. Harrison and Rob Pelinka, the Lakers' vice president of basketball operations and general manager, have a long-standing relationship dating to when Harrison was Kobe Bryant's marketing manager at Nike and Pelinka was Bryant's agent.
