re: If John Mcenroe Entered the Women's Draw This Week in Miami...

It's amazing how much better off pro golfers are compared to tennis players. Tennis is a much more exciting sport but players outside the top 100 can barely make a living while golfers are much more well supported financially.

I don't know...obviously contemporary to contemporary is different and no contest if you're ranked in the Top 500...but lets not forget...not just his age but Mac began professional tennis with a wooden racket.
I don't know how far apart you have to be from eras to make it competitive for the women but tennis today is a different game than when Mac played. Mac could get run around the court unless he still has a quality serve.

Scoville Jenkins was one of the top juniors in the US, who I believe skipped college and just didn't make it on the pro tour. I've seen him play in the world team tennis.
McEnroe does play tennis almost every day and always goes far advancing to the semis or finals of most of the tournaments on the senior tour. He also has great success in the world team tennis format against players much younger and trying to advance on the tour.
In my opinion, there's no doubt that McEnroe would win Sony Miami tournament. And McEnroe would absolutely destroy any legitimately rated USTA NTRP 5.0 out there (as well as most 5.5/6.0 players). Anyone who thinks otherwise is just plain stupid.

could he still win the first round of a grand slam?

Tennis is a game where slight differences in ability result in absolute beatdowns on the court.
In golf, it results in a few more birdies in a round than the other guy.
Read "The String Theory" by David Foster Wallace. Just google it. It's a great article that illustrates my above point about tennis.

Since you provided information - you could say..."uninformed" - it would strengthen your knowledge and point better. Stupid would be ignoring your facts instead not being privy to them.

Maybe if he drew James Blake.

Mac no longer uses a wooden racquet. And he wasn't the last 8 or 9 years of his career.
Top players, Novak Djokovic for example, routinely use Mcenroe as a hitting partner in practice. Mac is, of course, happy to oblige as I'm sure it helps fuel his ego. But understand that the man can still hit a tennis ball.

Not stupid...just uninformed.

In all seriousness, there ought to be a "Legends Versus Ladies" tournament. Why the hell not?

I'm sure he's entered his fair share of those.

Feminists. They wouldn't like the results.
Yeah, I know Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs...but I think that match was rigged. Riggs beat Marget Court 6-1, 6-2 a month before the King match, and Court was #1 in the world. Something seems fishy about the King/Riggs match.
Other such matches:
quote:
Battle of Champions, was played at Caesars Palace in Paradise, Nevada, in September 1992 between Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova. Navratilova had previously turned down invites to take on John McEnroe and Ilie Nastase, as she considered them undignified.[12] Connors said before the match that this was 'war.' Navratilova, on the other hand, said this was a battle of egos.[15] For this match, Connors was allowed only one serve per point, and Navratilova was allowed to hit into half the doubles court.[16] Connors won 7–5, 6–2.[17] The match was on PPV, and the promoters were hoping to get the match as a battle of the world's number ones, Connors and Monica Seles. Seles was 19 at the time, whilst Connors and Navratilova were 40 and 35, respectively. Navratilova made 8 double faults and 36 unforced errors. Connors, too, was nervous and there was a rumor that he had bet on himself to win at 4:1 and had placed a large amount of cash on it.[18]
[edit]Karsten Braasch vs. the Williams sisters
A fourth event dubbed "Battle of the sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open[19] between the 203rd ranked male player Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. The match took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park.[20] First Braasch took on Venus Williams and beat her 6–2. He also played Serena Williams and won 6–1 after the Williams sisters, who were 17 and 16 at the time, said they could beat any man ranked 200 or worse. Braasch was 15 years older than Serena and Venus, and had drunk 2 beers and played one round of golf that morning.[21] Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance" as he claimed he had played like someone ranked 600 in order to keep the game "fun."[22]
[edit]Other
In December 2003, Yannick Noah and Justine Henin played a friendly at the Forest National in Brussels. Noah won 4–6, 6–4, 7–6.[23]
It should be noted that Yannick Noah isn't in any way shape or form involved in tennis. He's a french rapper. I'd be surprised if he plays tennis once a yeear.

2. Johnny Mac would toy with Wozniacki. He'd make her look really really bad.
3. I also think he'd work over Sharapova pretty well.
4. I agree that Vika or Serena pose a much greater problem. If they were to play one match for all the marbles, I think Johnny Mac would likely win by a score of maybe 6-4, 6-3. They'd both have a great deal of difficulty breaking his serve -- which is still excellent -- and his unorthdox game cuts against their strengths.
Basically, I'm thinking that on the return of serve McEnroe be like a better version of Martina Hingis. He'd get breaks because he knows how to construct points and take away the things they do best. He's crafty like that.
But on one of their better days and one of his off days, they could conceivably beat him.

you must have read my mind. None of the women could break his serve, they probably have never seen the sidespin he can generate.
Not to mention none of them have ever played a true vollyer. who is the last woman? Novotna, Navratilova?

can a 55 year old man get up to the net quick enough?

Maybe not. I've seen him numerous times out in the city. He's actually in Chelsea a good bit and he's always drunk or getting there.

hell, the worst beating i ever took was from a 60 year old man. a former tulane women's coach he was. "oh by the way, i run marathon's and usually 10 miles ever morning"
it was shitty for him to play down like he did, he was the #3 4.0 player in the state. i was a first time tourney 3.5. lost in finals 0 and 0.

The consensus is that the top women in the world would be competitive with men who are second-tier college players. There’s the power difference, but the most crucial element seems to be speed. Maria Sharapova practices with an ex-pro named Michael Joyce, a guy who never cracked the Top 50 as far as I know, and there’s no comparison in how they move around the court. I would say the gap is bigger now than it was in the wood racquet days,in the early 70s, the men and women actually played very similar all-court, slice-backhand-based games (again, not at the same speed). The difference in power was not as great, and the men had not developed the huge topspin they use now (the women, for the most part, have not become heavy topspin hitters even with bigger racquets).

Against any woman outside the top 10, Mac is winning 6-2, 6-1 or worse. They would be absolute beatdowns.
A couple within the top 5 would have a chance to beat him but I doubt it. There's such a difference between the male/female game when it comes to the net game, both on offense and defense. None of them would have seen anything like the passing shots he'd be ripping by them and his skills at the net would have them tripping on themselves.
Johnny Mac is the man.

I agree with that first sentence.
The Michael Joyce Sharapova anecdote iilustrates a point that is certainly true, but that really goes without saying. Michael Joyce was actually Sharapova's coach (and additionally was penetrating her vagina with his cock). Anyway, Joyce was in his 30s when he was working with (and banging) Sharapova. He would have double-bageled her in 30 minutes, and that isn't hyperbole.
