ATL metro area was about 2.5mm in 1982
By 2000 it was 4.1 and now it is 6.2.
Do the cities you mentioned have the same growth? Don't know.
Are they all good sports towns? Not at all.
ETA: Charlotte grew from 1.4 to 2.7

Y'all are the ones claiming Atlanta's growth is in a different league than other places, I am just saying lots of places grow just as quickly. I am surprised this is news to so many people.
As a very quick example, here is a list of metros in the US and the estimated % population change from 2010 to 2014. Every metro below has a higher estimated growth rate than Atlanta:

San Jose

Wait I thought you were trying to compare "good" sports towns to Atlanta in regards to population growth. What does most of that list have to do with that argument? Just about every city you just listed is not considered a "good" sports city.

Right before the playoffs, the guys on the radio were begging for people to call in to discuss the Rockets. They wanted to talk Rockets, but weren't getting many calls. People still wanted to talk about the Texans even though the Rockets just grabbed the 2nd seed.

In this thread many people have said that one of the reasons Atlanta is not a good sports town is because "it is full of transplants" or "it has grown so much recently." I was pointing out that many/most big cities are full of transplants and that lots of cities have grown a lot recently. Therefore I do not think "transplants/growth" is a differentiating characteristic of Atlanta. Whether or not you think it is a "good" sports town.

I am just saying that your argument is falling flat. The data you provided shows no correlation to your argument. Would you expect a Louisiana person who moves to Atlanta for a job to switch from the Saints to being a Falcons fan? Obviously not. To go through the population growth that Atlanta has over the last 30 years IS abnormally high. Saying "atlanta is a bad sports city" without looking at pretty obvious reasons why is not the best way to approach the subject.
Reasons for a "bad" sports town:
sprawl
poorly constructed areas for gametime environment
lack of success (hence people don't get their hopes up)
transplants (the most obvious sign of this is the amount of opposing fans that come out to games)
etc.

You keep saying Atlanta's growth is exceptional. I listed (with a link) 14 other cities with pro sports (didn't count Austin) that have had a higher recent growth rate. Some of those are good sports towns and some are bad, but there are 14 of them, which is a good portion of cities with pro sports. Atlanta has grown a lot, but so have other places. Therefore I don't think that growth is the differentiator.

You listed 2010 to 2014.
If Saints, Cowboys, Steelers, Bears, Mets, Cubs, etc. etc. etc. fans retain their allegiances when they move to Atlanta, is Atlanta a bad sports town? Are they crappy fans or good ones?

Missed this earlier. I never said Atlanta was a good sports town. We have issues. But, we have competitive franchises in MLB, NFL and the NBA. We're getting a fairly hyped MLS team. We're obviously a very strong CFB town.
Yes, our attendance is not as good as more traditional sports towns or larger cities or cities better in-town residency. But, it's typically not awful compared to similar cities.
As to my initial objection, Atlanta and NOLA are not comparable for sports purposes. Even assuming NOLA was significantly more accomplished in sports or sports support, which it obviously is not, the town without the big 3 franchise is obviously not going to trump the town with the relatively successful MLB franchise. At best NOLA is very modestly better at supporting its franchises and has a Super Bowl win.
The most reasonable thing to say about Atlanta is that it should have better attendance, especially for the Braves. No Atlantan will dispute that. We'd also like to have better success, but we're not the Browns or the Indians like some would like to portray. Further, despite the attendance problems, all of our sports teams are pretty fervently supported when playing well, which is pretty much the same everywhere.

The ONLY argument NOLA has is the amount of SB hosts, but that means Miami is a great sports town using that logic.

And I agree that other than Green Bay, NOLA may support the Saints better than any other franchise.
Some might say Pittsburgh, but they are uber successful. The Saints were terrible for years and years, and honestly have only know a modicum of success. Still the fans were into them.

Sugar Bowl every year
There's been something big in town every year recently. Both ATL and NO are very good locations for hosting sports. No other way to cut it. I don't think you can say one is clearly a better sports town- in terms of hosting- than the other.
