I know I'm nearly 130 years late on this, as this rule was implemented in 1890, but still found it pretty interesting. Some adaptation of this in NBA would be fascinating to see.

quote:

A team consists of four mounted players in outdoor polo and three mounted players in indoor polo, and can be a mix of both men, women, professionals and amateurs. Players are handicapped on a scale of -2 (C) to 10, as determined by a player’s horsemanship, hitting ability, quality of horses, team play and game sense.

Example:
quote:

In matches played by "handicapped" players (as opposed to open competition, where handicaps are not considered), the handicaps of all four players are totaled. If the total handicap of a team is more than that of the team against which they are playing, the difference is added to the scoreboard. For example, if the Mounties polo team has a total handicap of six goals and the Tayto team has a handicap of four goals, Tayto would begin the match with a two-goal advantage.

I recently watched a match in which a team couldn't field their usual players, as their handicap was too great. They were basically forced to bench players in exchange for less skilled guys.

This is done in team bowling leagues, or at least the one I was in as a kid.

Makes sense. Bowling leagues and golf leagues have handicaps. It's a way to keep games competitive and have meaningful games between teams that are not so evenly matched. Some Polo clubs have better resources than others and it makes sense to have them to keep games worthwhile and competitive.

I would love to see some handicap system when Alabama plays FCS teams or Sun-belt teams. Base it on scholarships allowed and football budgets.

Sailing too (sometimes).

The NBA and NFL do this too, it's called "officiating" and usually works in favor of larger market teams.
