Honestly, as little as I am playing probably about 90 .... give me a month to prepare and I could break 80 ..

If you're a scratch golfer you'd probably shoot around 85

A lot has to do with how you play, if you have a high ball flight and can work the ball then the conditions won't effect your score as much as a guy "plays ugly but scores well," its one thing to get away with bad shots and be able to score well at your home course, its a whole 'nother thing to do it at a US Open track

Also the intimidation factor is big, if you go in thinking you'll need a miracle to keep it under 100, of the course you'll probably make a bunch of mistakes and have some blow up holes

I'm a 4, and I doubt I could break 90 from the tees they're playing with this rough, even with spotters. I think it would be incredibly difficult to hit the ball in the fairway. And the few times I was able to do it, there's a good chance I'd three putt if the pins are where they have been for the pros. I can pretty much guarantee I wouldn't make anything over 10 feet unless I had one straight up the hill.

Now, if you tell me to go there and try to break 100, I'm fairly certain I could do that. My strategy would change by a lot in that situation.

I was thinking about this the other day. I'm a 10 handicap and if I could break 110 I'd call it a success. Normal golfers just don't know what it's like to play fairways so tight, rough so thick, greens so quick, and the hardest pin placements imaginable

There are several blind second shots from the fairway

Few golfers outside the PGA have their club distances consistent enough to dial in for 18 holes. The fade/draw, spin and ball stopping requirements are way above us mere mortals

I would easily shoot 140

This is the biggest issue. If the pins are on flat spots, you can make bogeys and doubles after hacking out of the rough. With these pins, a 10 handicap would 4 putt for quad after getting on in 4.

The entire course is unlevel, including the greens

What a wonderful shot makers course for a major.

It really is a fantastic venue. Unfortunately they won't be back any time soon unless Merion acquires more land. The USGA is said to be losing $10 million this week.

Around 90. If my driver was on I could shoot in the 80s. If it wasn't, then I would be in trouble. I could make my way around the greens without embarrassing myself.

Losing $10M or just making $10M less?

I know they couldn't sell but 25,000 tickets/day.

We discussed this at work....Id say a 0 handicap average joe will shoot 100. A 4-7 would shoot 110-115. An 8-12 probably 120+

I'm about a 4 as well and I think I could break 90 on a good day, its a par 70, so bogey golf wold be an 88

there are 5 par 4's under 367 yds, I'd take a hybrid or less and hit those fairways and have a wedge in and aim for the dead middle of the green and try to two putt

theres that 115 par 3

then the shorter of the two par 5's

so that's 7 holes a 5 hcap or less should hit in regulation most of the time

lets say we play those holes in 4 over

miss two greens, have two 3 putts

then you just have to play other 11 holes in 15 over

the key would to limit doubles+

A lot of these tour professionals have a round in the 80's at Merion. I don't see the average club pro who is a scratch golfer breaking 90. It's just a different animal out there

Because they are pressing to shoot 70 or better. I'm not trying to shoot 70. I'm trying to shoot 95.

NOPE

So you can hit hyrbid within 15 yards of a fairway? LOL Then you can hit it perfect where it stays on the same tier not rolling off green...

quote:

theres that 115 par 3

Which you would 3 putt

quote:

then the shorter of the two par 5's

Which barely anyone hits the fairway

quote:

WTF?

quote:

lets say we play those holes in 4 over

Then you are a touring pro

quote:

miss two greens, have two 3 putts

2 greens? LMAO 2 3 putts? LOL YOu will 3 putt more and miss more greens in that 7 hole stretch

quote:

then you just have to play other 11 holes in 15 over

Close to bogey golf...LMAO

Look how many touring pros made double ++++++

I have family in Philly and have actually played Merion. I usually shoot between an 84-88 and at Merion I shot a 103.

The roughs weren't even as deep and the course wasn't even as long when I played it.

ETA: the fairways are even harder to hit when they haven't had rain in a few weeks.
