Won’t be nearly as much of that going on with COVID.
See, I kinda think with less things likely going on in the fall/winter Sundays, most fans will wind up tuning in regardless of how well-intentioned and firm their “boycott” might have seemed in June and even seems now. It will be interesting for sure.
Somebody mentioned the awful MLB and NBA ratings so far, and I’m not sure how much it has to do with audiences rejecting their “wokeness” as it is that no matter how much they try to simulate the real thing (and the NBA has done just about as well as possible), the games just come off as exhibitions because their eventual champions will have huge asterisks by them. It’s inevitable. So the games don’t feel like they mean as much, because, subconsciously, they don’t.
I know guys on here have argued with me about the asterisk issue, and I get it—they are trying to proactively protect a potential championship their team may win (I’m looking at you, mostly, Lakers and Dodgers fans). And I probably would too. But the fact is that we celebrate champions not because they are the “best”—that can be determined on paper—but because they are the most “deserving,” have endured the grind traveling all over the continent playing 82 and 162 games respectively, then having grinded through the pressure of the playoffs and playing in front of full stadiums.
No matter who winds up standing at the end of those seasons, it cannot be argued that they weren’t the most “deserving.” And no matter how well-intentioned they are and through no fault of their own, without having to go through those grinds, there is just no way their championships can be held in the same esteem as past championships. They won’t have earned it like previous champions have. So with asterisks, come less stakes. With less stakes, comes less interest. Less interest leads to bad ratings.
The NFL won’t have to deal with the asterisk factor, assuming they get through the season. And I’m not saying that an official asterisk should be placed next to the NBA and MLB 2020 champions, nor that they shouldn’t hang banners or buy rings. I just think that subconsciously, we fans will add ourselves.

Publicly it will be all “Black Lives Matter” and what not. But privately, I’m sure the prospect of losing money isn’t playing all that well.
I don’t think Roger Goodell makes it another 5 years.

Haven’t seen any of it.
I don’t see any patches on jerseys, names on the back or logos on the ice

His contract ends in 2024, and won't be extended

no preseason?
Exhibition games that not only are the starters playing very little, but the teams aren’t even really trying to win—no preseason won’t matter relative to the championship.

Yes, it will certainly be different than normal. But at least there will some fans (MLB has zero) and they are playing in their home stadiums (NBA are all in Orlando). Assuming they get through 16 games and the playoffs—which, granted is a huge assumption—it won’t be so fundamentally different than the NBA or MLB. I mean, the NBA played 63 games, took 4 months off, then resumed right before the playoffs. The teams playing right now are simply not the same as they were in March. And besides the no fans, MLB is only playing 60 out of 162 games. That may have made for a really interesting regular season until they added 6 extra teams to the playoffs.

Players sitting out randomly almost for positive COVID tests?
The handful of NFL players who have opted out hasn’t become a problem yet. New England has been hit the hardest, and almost nobody had them doing anything this year, anyway. The rest are no different than injuries that sideline players every year. A lot is just luck. Now, if we start to see more NFL guys do it, and there are a couple of Marlins-like outbreaks, then that’s a different story.
But I am merely presenting a theory that if the NFL plays as planned, their ratings won’t drop as much as MLB and the NBA because those leagues are playing for asterisks rather than it being BLM/kneeling related. I concede that theory may be wrong, even really wrong. I hope the NFL gets through their season and we get to see.

I'm expecting it to be similar to MLB. First couple of days there were a lot of people I meet that said frick'em. But after a week, a lot of the politics disappeared from the stadiums. Most people I talk to say they still don't turn it on at home, but they watch when they are out.
Lifelong Phanatic, this is the first year I didn't redeem my TMobile free MLB tv. Haven't watched any Sports but Golf in 2020. Quit NBA a decade ago sans some year's Finals.
Binge watch Pat Bet David, Joe Rogan, Jocko Willink, David Icke, Robert Kiyosaki,etc..Pods. All of which are way more interesting and informative than empty stands backdrops and SJW pontification.
