How Much of a Watershed Moment in MMA Was Kron Gracie's Loss to Charles Jourdain?

Some 30 years earlier, the world at large was formally introduced to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu with Royce Gracie's domination of boxer Art Jimmerson, which completely revolutionized fight sports. BJJ seemed insurmountable, with the most skilled ground specialists reigning for years over the various fight promotions.

Fast forward to May, 2023, and Kron Gracie, highly decorated and just two degrees removed from the founders of BJJ, Gracie was humiliated by mixed-martial artist Charles Jourdain. An otherwise forgettable fight that symbolically marked an end of an era--the end of the BJJ specialist.

So what do you all think the next 30 years in MMA looks like?

Isn't Jourdain a BJJ fighter also?

Yup. A black belt, apparently.

Kron is worlds better, I’m sure, but his game plan wasn’t very good.

Jourdain is good enough at BJJ to at least not do anything stupid and get out of Kron’s guard.

A West Monroe native fights Jim Miller tomorrow night. He practices at the local Kron gym in WM and is a brown belt. UFC Debut.

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us ‘take a monkey, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car.’ Thirty years later, Sebastian told us ‘I had to start my car like a computer, it’s very complicated.’ And Nico Rosberg said that during the race – I don’t remember what race - he pressed the wrong button on the wheel. Question for you both: is Formula One driving today too complicated with twenty and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical programme during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?

Longo was talking about how in the early days basically all the moves in bjj worked in mma because nobody knew how to defend. Not the case anymore. Back then most of the guys were skilled usually in 1-2 disciplines but not top level athletes. Nowadays the athletic ability is exponentially higher and almost everyone is skilled in 3-4 disciplines.

Clearly not only a BJJ fighter.

Is this a new variant of English?

That's what I'm seeing. Most fighters seem well-rounded in a variety of arts, cherry-picking the most effective techniques from a common buffet. Even moreso, though, these new guys just seem to be superathletes--among the most highly trained athletes in sports. So we're getting these superfreaks who are rising to the top of divisions.

The infusion of collegiate and olympic level wrestlers has had a huge impact on the sport. Wrestlers know the grind and have great cardio.

Designer steroids and a former federal agent concocting schemes to clear a big name so he can continue fighting.

Oh wait, the future is already here.

I remember watching UFC1 on VHS I rented from a Blockbuster store. Damn video changed everything people thought about fighting. Also was huge watching Matt Hughes dominate Royce Gracie and submit him.

Not as much as when a blind Frank Dux won the Kumite

What I can’t understand about Kron’s plan for this fight is why not tap into his connection with Nate and Nick Diaz? They are very close and even though Kron is in Montana now, you would have thought he would have hooked up with them to work on standup. I used to live in Monroe and even though I am under Royler I used to roll at Kron’s affiliate school in West Monroe because I knew the former owner. Even went out to LA and rolled at Kron’s. Dude is a legit beast on the ground. Maybe one of the best, but in the current era of MMA everybody knows jits now and if you aren’t well rounded, you are going to get smashed. Kron learned a painful lesson cause I doubt he gets another UFC shot until he starts in the trenches again and shows he can be more versatile.

Kron just isnt a ufc level fighter. I hope he never fights in the ufc again all his fights suck and he is just taking a spot from someone that could put in a entertaining fight.

While I agree that his fights suck, that still doesn’t diminish the fact he is one of the best jits guys on the planet and his last name is Gracie. That’s probably the only reason he got a shot and another UFC shot anyway cause Dana knew that last name would sell a few PPV’s.

Kron hasn’t been training seriously since his loss to Cub Swanson

He needs to return training with Henry Akins, who spent many years under Rickson

Yea Olympic level wrestler have an easier time to transition into striking and submission game

But for the modern era, demian Maia was able to hold his own for the most part for being very one dimensional

I think everyone assumes the same reason: Kron didn't care about cross-training and becoming a better MMA fighter. He was just there for the payday.
