How long have the guys in the booth been wired to a player or players on the field?

First of all I am not an active baseball fan so this might be germans AF. The guys in the booth are talking and joking around with the mic’d up player in the field during play is completely new to me. How long has this been going on?

I flipped on the Yankees and Red Sox game and the booth is having an active conversation with Kiki Hernandez while on defense. This is freaking awesome.

The MLB is a joke and this is just another sad novelty attempt that makes it look even worse.

They started in the All Star game a couple years ago. I think this is the first year of regular season. I don’t care for it myself.

I’m okay if they want to put together some audio highlights from a mic’d player and play them during down time, but the forced patter is tiresome.

I enjoy it, but I’m not some angry old get-off-my-lawn a-hole.

The ongoing narrative is baseball needs to do a better job of marketing itself to attract young viewers. Market your stars they say.

But when you ask them how to do this they do not really have an answer other than this. Mic'd up players...that's the only answer I've ever heard any of them give.

They say you need to market the stars personalities. So they've been doing this for the last 2-3 years...not sure if it's really moving the needle.
