Bird and Magic are essentially equal. I think each says the other is better. You can make an argument for either, but they are generally ranked 4-5 behind Jordan, Kareem and Lebron.
Some days I put Magic 4 and some days it's Bird.
The 80s were arguably the greatest NBA decade. If you missed it, you really missed something special.

Growing up with Celtics-Lakers and the sheer hatred from the fan base it was like Auburn-Alabama...NBA had a CFB like atmosphere.
If the Celtics lost in the playoffs, they would serenade the Eastern victor with " Beat L.A.! Beat L.A."
Then you had that nastiness between Chicago and the Bad Boys.
Just assumed this was the NBA. Never thought the game would turn into a love huggy, pussy-fest.

2. Magic gets the nod, what he did as a rookie in game 6 of the Finals is the stuff of legend.
Yet Bird won Rookie of the Year by 60-3 votes.
Because Bird took a shitty team and had the greatest turnaround in NBA history...from 29-53 to 61-21. The only addition to the roster was Bird.
They lost in the Eastern Conference Finals to loaded Philly.
While Magic had a preseason Championship contender with Kareem (who was ACTUALLY voted the Finals MVP and was the League MVP) but Magic accepted the award on TV after Game 6...with the interviewer basically giving it to him. (Rick Barry).

Jordan
Kareem
Lebron
Magic
Bird
Russell
Wilt
That's how I rank the top 7.
Those are really the only serious GOAT contenders anyone ever mentions.

Thats not true. You'd be hard pressed to find a list that doesn't have magic in the top 5. Bird is usually in that 6-10 range, with the likes of Wilt, Shaq, Kobe, Russell, Duncan.

Philly was good in 1980, but they were far from "loaded." They were "loaded" once they got Moses. Boston was a better team and should have won the ECF that year. And you cannot understate Magic's Game 6 performance. Put into its proper context, it is simply one of the greatest games every played in NBA history.

Philly was the preseason favorites to win the title from 1979 to 1984.
Bird had a much tougher task getting through the East than Magic cruising through the West.

Jordan first.
And the Bird and Magic tied at number two.
Maybe Bird a slight advantage. I mean Magic. Or Bird. Who knows because all three broke the mold in the golden era of the sport .

Again, preseason favorites =/= "loaded." You are clearly confusing them with other Philly teams.

Umm but yeah, then he beat the team that made it through the tough east. Without their best player in the series clinching game.

And remember magic was just a rookie that went into Philly and dominated the game like a guy that had been in the league for years. Magic and bird came into the league the same year and changed the league forever. I have magic at #2 all time because he may have have good players around him but he made them great players. Bird Is the biggest trash talker in nba history but could back it up.
If I were to start a team I could not go wrong with having any on of these guys.

I love Magic, but he's not better than Kareem.

Yet when it came time to cut the mustard, Magic > Bird.

Yeah that was an injustice, yes Magic's Game 6 was legendary but Kareem carried that team throughout the series and his Game 5 (on a BUM ANKLE) was SOOOOO huge for the Lakers ultimately winning the series

Each one of these guys was what I call magnet players for winning a championship or championships. What I mean by magnet is that they were these great players, franchise players that attracted other great players and good players to build around them to win championships. But in ranking them I'd have to put it like this
1. MJ of course
2. To me Bird and Magic are equal, you can rank either one above the other in this list, but they're equal to me in what they bring.
Bird is that great all-around player that makes everyone around him better, but he can shoot the hell out of the ball too. Magic, the same thing makes everyone around him better, but his passing is off the charts. Both are the same height too, but that's the difference between them, one's better at passing and the other shooting.

Bird was a great passer too. He could just tip passes to teammates...and seemed to know where everyone was on the court.
But yeah, Magic was transcendent in passing but Bird was INFINITELY a better shooter...I mean Bird is on the all-time list of great shooters.
Magic was labeled a "facilitator" early in his career while Bird was labeled the NBA's "best all-around player."
