How did Paul Hornung win the Heisman in 1956?

Yeah, i get that the game was different back then but look at his stats as QB:
threw for 917 yds 3 tds, 13 ints
his team finished 2-8
He would get benched at any school by today's standard with those stats and that W-L record.
Jim Brown should've won.

I know there's a versatility award named after him, so he probably contributed in a lot of different ways besides QB.

Massive ND bias. Most Heismans went to a handful of teams, the same few teams that got press coverage. They were often awarded in the middle of the season. People complain about it now but it's never been a fair award

He played tailback, safety, quarterback, punted, kicked field goals, kick offs, and returned kicks. I know it seems ridiculous in this day and age to give a Heisman to a guy on a 2-8 team, but he was amazing. He was the first person to ever win the Heisman, be the #1 NFL pick, win NFL MVP, and be inducted in both the college and NFL HOF.
In the 1956 season, he led his team offensively in passing, rushing, scoring, kickoff and punt returns, and punting. He also played defense and led his team in passes broken up and was second in interceptions and tackles made. He jokes about the fact that he was among the nation's leaders in kickoff returns by saying, "We gave up so many points that our opponents were always kicking off to us."

Are you Holy Jesusing because Pete Rose commented in a Paul Hornung thread? They did have a lot in common.

Do you not realize that was in the two way player era? As was already mentioned, he did a hell of a lot more than just play QB.

Yeah, he should have won. But do you not realize what was going on in 1956? Racism and discrimination wasn't limited to just the South.

So did Alabama's Harry Gilmer in 1945. His team went 10-0 and won the Rose Bowl in dominating fashion. Where's his Heisman Trophy?

Notre Dame was a producer of Heisman winners. Lujack, Hart, Bertelli, etc. Their star player was an almost automatic Heisman contender.

I'm not saying it's right. All I'm saying is he was a pretty good football player worthy of a shot at the Heisman. Did him being at ND have anything to do with it? Of course. I don't think that's a shocker. Did racism have something to do with it? Wouldn't surprise me in the least. But, it's not like everyone just picked a random ND player off a 2-8 team for shits and giggles.
Army had two guys in the top 2 of the award in 1945, Blanchard and Davis, in what most say is the greatest backfield ever assembled. Combine that with WWII just wrapping up, kind of a no-brainer there.
Blanchard also played multiple positions...

1945 is a different year from 1956.
Brown should have won in 56, he didn't because he was black, plain and simple.

He bet on himself to win it. 12 to 1 odds at Caeser's.

Dick Schapp said he voted for Brown and then stopped voting as a Heisman voter after Brown came in 5th in 1956.
Beano Cook: "You win the Heisman by either playing for Notre Dame or playing great against Notre Dame."
Carson Palmer was middle of the pack to last in the Heisman all year...until the last game, when he lit up the Irish on National television and clinched the Heisman...
And Beano Cook famously said: "I'm voting for Casey Palmer."
An offensive lineman came in 4th ahead of Jim Brown in 1956.

He must have sucked since he played so much and they went 2-8.

While he had a great year, he didn't exactly dominate. His rushing stats were 158 carries for 986 yards for a 6.2 AYC, and 13 TD's. He also caught 5 passes for 56 yards and a TD. The only category he led the nation was in rushing TD's. He was 7th in yards from scrimmage.
