How did MLB survive Steve Carlton never speaking to the media?

Hall of Fame Pitcher. Won two World Series and 4 Cy Young's, yet notoriously disdained the media and flat out decided not to talk to ANYBODY for the bulk of his career. And it was ALLOWED TO HAPPEN?!?!?!
How the hell did the league not implode without reporters being able to get his great insight into any number of things on the regular?

Was it in his contract have media availability?
And really, a guy that played from 1965 to 1988 is your example? This is almost not worth the response. Almost.

Wasn't Sandy Koufax an intensely private person who didn't care for media sessions, either? The horror.

I hear gladiators didn't give too many press soundbytes as well.

What the hell does this have to do with anything? Hell, if anything, print media back then was a whole lot more dominant, especially with regard to baseball.

How has the NBA survived Gregg Popovich...you know, the guy who has made a mockery of media coverage in the NBA for a decade+ now.

The media today is definitely the same as back then. Totally.

Again, nothing to explain what is so strikingly "different" and why it's seemingly much more "necessary" today to get an athlete's insights.

I have no idea, but how about that 1972 season in which he pitched 346 innings and had a WHIP of .993!

The more important question is how did the NBA survive with requiring a translator for Yao Ming. Who knows what the big man was really saying? He could have been dog-cussing American reporters all day and the translator would have just been giving the cliched soundbite responses.

Cause it wasn't part of his collectively bargained union contract. So STFU.

There's a lot more at stake today. Too much money to be made. God Damnit my network has a billion dollar deal with your league and I want an interview with that guy NOW.
There's also a lot less space to fill when your only national media obligations are Sports Illustrated, Sport Magazine, The Sporting News (all weekly tabloids), and one nationally-televised MLB game per week.

Negative. The sports media is more unnecessary now than ever.

Apparently, because it continues to come up.

What did Lynch do that breaks what's in his contract for media availability?
There is nothing in there that says you have to give serious answers.

Lynch is a master troll and is making mad bank off of this as a personality (Skittles, car rental commercials etc). His PR guy is a genius
