of football.

They believed you couldn’t have more than 7 on the line of scrimmage.

The expert had to correct them.

Only way it's not a legal play is if it was a pass.

While I agree because Herb was a college qb, have respect for the dude’s knowledge between nfl and college. Also the travel schedule, he must love his job.

That’s not correct.

You can throw a pass, but only the two ends and the QB are eligible and can go downfield.

Herbie is great at his job. He got confused and made a mistake.

Refs missed the call. RT was uncovered and therefore an ineligible receiver. Didn’t report as “eligible”. Would have bumped them out of FG range.

That’s not how it works in CFB. A player with jersey number between 50-79 is never an eligible receiver, and cannot become an eligible receiver unless they switch their jersey number. So there’s no such thing as “reporting as eligible” in college football. You would have to report an actual number change.

CFB rules do not require the end-man to wear an eligible number. They simply say that for a player on the LOS to be an eligible receiver they must A) be at the end of the LOS (uncovered) and B) wear a number other than 50-79.

So a tackle can be the end-man on the LOS, he just can’t go downfield or touch a forward pass.

NFL rules are different, and I believe require a restricted number to report as eligible every time they line up on the end of the LOS.

Also as mentioned in this thread, the rules do not require exactly 7 players in the LOS. They require no more than 4 players in the backfield.

That is incorrect.

I always thought the limit was on how many players the offense could have in the backfield; a team can have no more than four players in the backfield. Thus the offense could have eight or even nine players on the line.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong.

I believe the rule focuses on how many players can be in the backfield , it does NOT look at how many players can be on the line. Four maximum for backfield, NOT seven maximum for offensive line.

Not true. You can have as many as 10 on the line of scrimmage. However, you can have no more than 4 in the backfield.

That’s why the network has a retired rules official on standby.
