In the 1970s, the winner of the USC-Notre Dame game either won the National Championship or finished #2.
1972 #1 vs #10 (National Champion)

1974 #6 vs #5 (#2)
1976 #3 vs #13 (#2)
1977 #5 vs #11 (National Champion)
1978 #3 vs #8 (National Champion)
1979 #4 vs #9 (#2)
1972 #1 vs #10 (National Champion)
1973 #6 vs #8 (National Champion)
1974 #6 vs #5 (#2)
1976 #3 vs #13 (#2)
1977 #5 vs #11 (National Champion)
1978 #3 vs #8 (National Champion)
1979 #4 vs #9 (#2)

OSU / Michigan seems like they would have had a run of top 10 games at some point.
Ohio State-Michigan Ten Years War is close, but not quite:
1969 - OSU 1, Michigan 12
1970 - OSU 4, Michigan 5
1971 - OSU unranked, Michigan 3
1972 - OSU 9, Michican 3
1973 - OSU 1, Michigan 4
1974 - OSU 3, Michigan 2
1975 - OSU 1, Michigan 4
1976 - OSU 8, Michigan 4
1977 - OSU 4, Michigan 5
1978 - OSU 16, Michigan 6

I grew up in this era and the FSU-Miami rivalry generally had more at stake from a national championship standpoint from about the mid ‘80s through the early ‘00s.
Aside from ‘96, there’s not another team from the Spurrier era I can point to and say they would have had a great shot at a national title with a little luck. But I can think of several FSU and Miami teams that could have done so.
Florida was great in the ‘90s but typically a notch below national championship level because their roster wasn’t as well rounded, especially on D. Not a lot of Spurrier guys were physically dominant.

That was my favorite game of the year back in the 90’s.
Same. I remember going fishing during the second half of the game in 1994 because UF was up 31-3. Bama was playing UF the next weekend in the SEC Championship and I remember my uncle saying, "Look what Florida is going to do to us next week". As I paddled around my grandad would stick his head out of the camper and yell the score every few minutes.
"31-10!"
"31-17!"
"31-24!"
"31 ALL!!"

Sounds like I missed some fun times. My first UF/FSU game was 2003. 2012 game was 10-1 vs 10-1 but I don't think either team had a chance of making the BCS title game.

FSU Miami around that same time had to be pretty close.
Miami started taking off just as Florida was rounding into form.
FSU's 13 year run of top 4 finishes is insane.

Michigan/Notre Dame also decided to end their renewed rivalry for awhile after their early season meetings in the late 80s/early 90s would knock the loser out of Title contention before October.
Final AP ranking of the winner in parentheses:
1988 , Sept. 11th - #9 vs. #13 (1)
1989, Sept. 16th - #1 vs. #2 (2)
1990, Sept. 15th - #1 vs. #4 (6)
1991, Sept..14th - #3 vs. #7 (6)
1992, Sept..12th - #3 vs. #6 Tied (4, 5)
1993 , Sept. 11th - #3 vs. #11 (2)
1994 , Sept. 10th - #3 vs. #6 (12)
As to being a big brother to Notre Dame...Rivalry goes back to 1877 when the Wolverines literally taught the game of football to a group of Notre Dame students.
Talk about the definition of Bluebloods.

Notre Dame wrote to Michigan and asked if they could make a stop at Notre Dame, on their way to Chicago, and teach some seniors this rugby brand of football.
“If matters can be properly adjusted,” the student newspaper, The Scholastic, announced on Oct. 29, “a match game of football will take place on the senior campus about the 27th of next month…
The Ann Arbor boys hold the championship of the West, and are such fine players that they will probably contend with the leading Eastern teams next spring for the college championship of the United States. However, there is good material here for a fine team, and the boys will undoubtedly give the Michigan players a hard ‘tussle.’ ”
