I think it was pretty obvious that the OP meant guys that actually went to college.

it's very unlikely. you'd have to have a guy play for a shite team in a major conference
great players who end up at shite schools (like a larry bird or lamar odom) play against shite conferences they win to get into the tourney
CBB is one of the least even-spread leagues in terms of talent. you don't see elite guys playing for shite teams in good conferences that often....and i mean CBB-level elite. there is usually a flaw that puts them there, which will carry into the NBA

Kevin Johnson, believe he made the NIT a few times, but never NCAA
Shawn Kemp, signed with KY, but had some issues and left before the season and went to C.C. then declared after 1 year there.
John Stockton, Gonzaga never made the tourney until 95

I think I found one. Allan Houston. Doesn't look like he played in the NCAA tourny at Tennessee. Averaged 17+ pts in his NBA career.

In fact, only five schools have gone longer than Centenary without a trip to basketball's title chase (Army, The Citadel, Northwestern, St. Francis-NY and William & Mary).
I find that to be very interesting considering Northwestern is located minutes away from a recruiting hotbed, are excellent academically, and are in a major conference.

Paul George could be one if he keeps improving.

When Maravich didn't make it, the tourney was a lot smaller and the NIT was still a very solid destination. Back then only one SEC even qualified for NCAA tourney.
While this is true, I'm not sure those LSU teams would have made the tourny even with today's standards.

you really can't imagine how northwestern would have problems recruiting a top-flight basketball team?

I think George Gervin went with Long Beach State but they were vacated by the NCAA

Dr. J never made the tourney with UMass
