Whitey Herzog, the gruff and ingenious Hall of Fame manager who guided the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and a World Series title in the 1980s and perfected an intricate, nail-biting strategy known as "Whiteyball," has died. He was 92.
"Whitey spent his last few days surrounded by his family. We have so appreciated all of the prayers and support from friends who knew he was very ill. Although it is hard for us to say goodbye, his peaceful passing was a blessing for him," his family said in a statement released by the Cardinals.

Whitey looked like he was 80 in 1985 during the World Series. RIP Whitey.

Hopefully Rigazzi's up on the Hill was dishing out the fish bowls of Bud and fried ravioli in his honor last night.

I love Whiteyball. Our high school coach used to preach this, largely because we had no power hitters, but it worked very well. We frustrated the hell out of other teams with our baserunning, patience at the plate, and just putting the ball in play instead of trying to crush the ball over the fence.
This actually worked great in high school because high school fielders had a much higher success rate with pop flies than hard grounders/line drives.

He also scouted the Mets in the mid 60's, and his efforts helped them win in '69 and the NL pennant in '73. He won everywhere he went.

Losing Coleman to a freak accident in the NLCS, the team hitting a .190 or so, and one bad call in Game 6 would age you as well.

Born and raised in the metro area too. He connected with the fanbase in a way that no one else has since.
