Gay and Derozan are almost the exact same player
Nothing wrong with having 2 uber athletic wings. Neither one is a ball handler

I just don't know who gets them buckets at the end of playoffs games now. With zone defenses its really tough to dump the ball off to a big man and let him go to work on the final possession. They already struggled to score

I don't feel like Gay was doing any of this though. He's just not good enough to adequately perform that task, but he thinks he's good enough. So it ends up as a negative.

I do think they can dump the ball into ZBo or Gasol and draw doubles and kick out to the shooters (shooter = Prince) or more PnRs with Conley and a big. I feel like these alternative are better than the option of letting Gay create and take bad shots. Or if not better as least equal.

So is this right?

Memphis: Ed Davis, Tayshaun Prince, and Austin Daye
Detroit: Jose Calderon
Toronto: Rudy Gay and a second round pick

This could actually be pretty damn good for Memphis

The team I actually like it the least for is Toronto. Ross, Derozan, and Gay are going to be really redundant, and doesn't Gay make $20 million for the next 2.5 seasons?

He isn't famous enough or exciting enough to draw casual fans, I bet.

This deal kind of reminds me of when the Nuggets traded Nene. He's a good player and all(Gay), but he just isn't worth the money he is owed over the next two years (18+ avg). You get Prince back who still manages to be efficient in isolation plays this year, and defends decently well, something that will work will the whole Memphis Grit&Grind. Ed Davis > Speights who they traded a week ago. Austin Daye is pretty much on the Anthony Randolph project level at this point.

Detroit is 5.5 back of Boston. If the chips fall and Detroit continues to play .500+ ball (6-6 in Jan), maybe they can catch if Drummond improves like he has been. Singler proves to be a solid player when he starts playing more (shooting above 40% from 3 in the past couple games). But that's 3 maybes so probably not going to happen.

As everybody else has said, there is way too much duplicity with Tornoto's wings. But as an upside, we finally get to see Lowry with no other PG that he is battling for playing time.

I thought Rudy Gay was one of if not THE best player on the Griz team? Why did they trade him?

he was the leading scorer, but he was maybe the 3rd best on the team behind ZBo and Gasol.

his style of play also did not mesh well

and not to mention his contract blows

Think of all the jerseys they will sell in Toronto now that the word "Gay" is on them.
