I've been a casual golfer that has drifted away from the game for a while but is now looking to get back into it seriously. I was looking into a new set of clubs and have entertained the thought of getting the MP53 irons, even though my game isn't quite at "that level" yet.

I was looking for opinions on "learning" the game with blades but have heard from many that "they're too hard to hit" etc. The way I see it, I'm going to have these clubs for a while and I'd rather get the blades and push myself to improve and play well with them. Any thoughts?

Don't do it. Get some form of a cavity back. Hell a lot of pros don't even hit blades. Your golf experience will be much more enjoyable if you get some irons that fit your capabilities instead of your ego.

Don't do it. I see people buying blades thinking they'll one day be good enough for them... They end up selling them a month later... Why not get a player's cavity? You still have some of the workability of blades and some forgiveness. A ton of pros use AP2's, i20's, R11's, etc.

I wish I would have gone the player's cavity route. It was nice having fun with the Super GI irons when I first started, but I'm in the process of learning my swing and making some changes now that I have i20's, but I still get some forgiveness out of them.

Are AP2's not considered blades? I feel like that line is pretty similar to the Mizune MP53s. Am I mistaken?

AP2's are cavity backs.

Therefore, the MP53s would also be considered cavity backs... rendering this a stupid question?

Any opinions on the MP53s/AP2s for my situation?

I play MP-52's and absolutely love them. I had some pings and hated the offset and the view I got at address (too fat of a club head for me). The Mizunos have a great feel when you hit them pure.

I'm also a fan of fixing your swing as opposed to buying equipment to counteract the problems. My only hesitation for you is if you're just getting back into the game it's going to be frustrating at first and hitting the Mizunos might make it a bit more difficult until you are able to find your swing.

Blades may look "cooler" in your bag, but I'd much rather be shooting a lower score playing snow shovels.

My first set of clubs were Wilson Billy Casper blades. Like most kids, I "inherited" them from my dad. One day, when I was about 17, my friend let me hit his cavity back clubs (Yamaha as I recall). I immediately started saving some money and went and got a set of Spalding Executives as soon as I could. Pretty good for the era, but looking back, they were pretty darn heavy compared to today's clubs.

I did have this persimmon 3-wood that, to this day, is the sweetest feeling club I've ever swung. I THINK it was a MacGregor. I could hit it about 230 or so, but it always had the sweetest feel to it. At some point I lost it, but I wish I still had that club.

You can't "learn" the game playing them. You can learn to play the clubs, but if your ability level isn't close to being capable to do so, your going to hurt your game. Those clubs are built like that for a reason. If your still antsy about getting something that looks cool, go with muscle backs.

I played with cavity backs until I was a 5-6 handicap, then played with cavity/muscle (still do) and am scratch. I'm not even going to consider blades for a while...

In short, you can learn to play the clubs, but you can't use those clubs to help you learn to play the game.

Can't get a better response than this. I made the mistake of buying some Ping I3 blades about 8 years ago. I quit playing because of it.

I don't think AP2s are a true "blade" although its a forged club with smaller faces.

I played my best golf with Mizuno MP33s when I was in college. I also had a +2 handicap then. I'm playing about at about a 1 or 2 right now and I don't think I'd try to hit those again.

If you gotta ask??? Don't buy!

Not even trying to start shite with you. I have picked up several sets of blades in Golfsmith over the years and thought they look awesome. I have picked up a couple Taylor guitars in Guitar Center too. I have no business owning either.

Difference being a Taylor COULD make my shitty 3 chords sound better. I am a much better golfer than guitar player.

Hit them a TON at Golfsmith or some place witha good demo area. If you can't make them "click" respectfully put them down and walk away.

AP2 sounds like your best bet.

Don't do it, I play about 4 times a month, and I was shooting playing to a 8 handicap, (OT pathetic I know) and I switched from some game improvement cavity backs to a set of players cavities and I have not gotten my handicap back down to single digits over 1 1/2 years later . I have more birdies and pars than before, but I also have more doubles than before.
The simple fact is people buy clubs based on how good their best shots are, when they should be basing them on how bad their worst shots are. Go with a set of solid game improvement irons, trust me on this one.
ETA: I played the other day with a borrowed set of super game improvements, and hit more greens than before, and shot better than I have been.

Of course it isn't. There's a cavity back built in.

This is a blade:
